Nursing is far removed from what it's supposed to be, and even further away from what it could be. I'm sick of the BS politics. I've come to find that nurse, much like everything else, is a microcosm of society. It's enough to make you want to quit at times. Ok....enough of my ranting. Any thoughts? Any experiences?
My dad left over 1 million in assests. Promised my mother who was in hospice she would live out her life at home. He is now gone. She is alive 4 years later and burning through 2k per week for senior care. That includes ME watching her ( unpaid) 50 hours a week and buying her food and diapers. Living long with dementia will eat your assests. Sad but true. Yes. I have consulted lawyers and accountants. When I die, I will likely have my house and a very basic existence. I wish I had done things differently, but at 53 with working and caring for my mother, I have limited earning potential.
At least I don't have huge student loans like my kids.
My daddy used to say that in order to retire comfortably a couple needed 1 million dollars in the bank by age 65. He did it and he and my mom had a decent worry free retirement living off the interest and never touching the principal which they left to us kids along with another $600, 0000.00 in non liquid asserts. My husband and I just reached the Million threshold this year and our house will be paid off soon but neither one of us is walking away from our jobs any time soon. College tuition for our son looms in the future and we both have a few good years left. I just got about $250,000.00 from my parents estate and am looking for a ranch property to retire to in the Pacific Northwest or possibly fly-over country. Then is cows, horses, dogs and hopefully a grandbaby or two in my future.Hppy
Daaaang you living the dream!!
Whatever you do, don't move to the PNW. It's expensive as hell to live here and the weather is lousy for nine months out of the year. Of course, the weather in flyover country isn't so hot either, but I think the cost of living is a lot cheaper. Just throwing that out there.
I, too live in the Pacific Northwest. This lady speaks the absolute truth. $$$$$ and lotsa rain, if you live West of the Cascade Mountains. A lot of people move here and then gripe all day about the rain. Research would have saved aggravation, impotent annoyance at our NORMAL weather patterns and money.
Don't plan to retire here unless you can afford it and love rain....3/4 of the year.
Politics is when you strive to be a leader and join administration because you believe in nursing but then you get the backlash from the union members against you for the smallest reason and then upper management that sees you as the as amin. have no union protection uses you as the sacrificial lamb to calm the union .....as they carry on with their plans without your consent. What do you have to say about this
Honestly, pretty much every field sucks. Retail sucks. Hospitality sucks. Some of my friends are engineers, and sometimes it sucks. Education sucks. In just about every job, you have to get up at the same time every day and do things you might not want to, or not be able to pay your bills.
Work is a microcosm of society, in that a bunch of people trying to make their rent plod through their day, and have typical interpersonal conflict and deal with environmental stressors. It's not a nursing thing. It's a human thing.
Take comfort in the fact that it's awful everywhere

Money isn't everything and that 1.6 million is being split between 6 kids and 14 grand children (After the cost of 2 years of very expensive Alzheimer's care for mom.) My folk weren't perfect but they knew how to live within their means. My husband and put a million dollars in the bank by a lot of very hard work, frugal living, saving every dime we could. No fancy vacations or new cars, We live in the house my husband grew up in and only have a small mortgage for tax purposes.
