Ok, I've had it. I'm tired of whippersnapper nurses, smart alecky new grads who think that their gold plated degrees trump experience.
I'm hungry for young flesh.
I'm officially a Crusty Old Bat, to put it nicely.
Glorifying the perpetuation of horizontal violence and sadistic tendencies. Classy. What's that thing called, again? Oh yeah, Karma. Won't be so funny when the new grad you were mean to a few years prior, goes back to school to escape the COB and becomes your Manager. I love when that happensNIGHT SHIFTS & HOLIDAYS FOR ALL COB MEMBERS!! (Insert evil laugh)
It's clear you have no clue how this started, so let me fill you in. "COB" was an insult thrown at several of the older members here by a young member. We decided to turn that insult into a running joke.
Horizontal violence isn't a one-way street. Younger nurses are known for being nasty to older nurses too. And if you were so worried about that issue, you wouldn't have ended your post as you did.
That term "horizontal violence" is so silly sounding. I must've been made up by a desk jockey working on a thesis somewhere.
And, redefining the word "violence" to include catty women in the workplace being rude to someone, is just just wrong. That's like equating our government to the Nazis because they made it harder to get a building permit.

First of all, thank you for the history lesson (no sarcasm intended)!! That makes it even more awesome, since the COBs are the AN cool kids on the block.
In response to your second point, we read a study in school which found that older nurses are actually more likely to be bullied than younger nurses. The authors attributed it to the fact that baby bats are now coddled in the new grad nurse residency role.

Boom.
Actually didn't know that, but I can see it.

Thank you so much for your post. I'm not surprised that there's documentation for something I and other "vintage" nurses have seen.
I attribute it to times having changed. Back when I was a student and new grad, new nurses looked up to senior nurses. I remember one nurse at my clinical site who was in her late 60s. I was awed and a bit envious of her knowledge and skills.
These days, older nurses are considered a "problem" if they can't run as fast as the younger nurses. Instead of being admired for their experience, seasoned nurses are accused of being out of touch with nursing practice.
I've been bullied by younger nurses. Management turned a blind eye to it. Fortunately, I got a better job and was able to get out of that situation.

I wonder what diagonal violence looks like?
I'm not a COB. I will never be a COB. I dislike cliques of any kind (and I simultaneously shudder and roll my eyes at the idea that there are "cool kids" here). Seeing all the obsequiousness being displayed in this thread is obnoxious.
No matter how many years I will be a nurse, I will never be crusty and grouchy to new nurses.
I am impatient with ineptitude and stupidity, but that's irrespective of my career choice or number of years therein.
