I give in, I'm a COB

Ok, I've had it. I'm tired of whippersnapper nurses, smart alecky new grads who think that their gold plated degrees trump experience.

I'm hungry for young flesh. ;)

I'm officially a Crusty Old Bat, to put it nicely.

LOL! I could just see you jumping up and down waving your hands!

Yeah, we really can't take her anywhere. She drips pee like an excited puppy when she's nervous, too. Terribly embarrassing.

To ChronicAG: You know what's really rewarding? Even tho I'm a COB, I learn new things all the time from newer nurses. I think a lot of great things are taught in Nursing school now that weren't available way "back in the days." I do lots of CEUs and participate in NTI, etc, but now and again I pick up some great information from our new folks. There's lots of folks in most professions who just shouldn't be there (young and old, including doctors), but the rest of us just have to work together as colleagues to make the best outcomes for our patients. Have to say, most of my co-workers are AWESOME----I'm very blessed in that!!!

Heh... this thread makes me smile. I used to be a nurse educator for Mayo Clinic. Mayo LIKES to hire new grads, they prefer it. They want to train them the Mayo way before they learn lazy habits somewhere else.

In many ways I am a big 'ol "B" and I know it, you don't like it? Go work somewhere else. We had adult work to do.

A resident *will* kill a person or two before he learns his job. A nurse is quite likely to do the same.

Someone had to tell them........... I thought it was a duty, you know?

I love all the COBs in this thread. My first job out of nursing involved sugarcoating and a complete lack of learning. My second job involved a nurse who openly rolled her eyes at me, and asked me often, "what are you waiting for?" Zero sympathy. I learned so much. Refusing to follow orders, calling a tired doctor back, and questioning illogical things loudly? That's me! (To be fair though, in a teaching hospital, if you're not questioning residents and fellows, you're probably risking your patient's life. lol)

Hah! I have am issue with the COB who asked if anyone remember dial phones! My early in life phone involved an operator who asked if I had been a good girl that day before she connected me with "Mama." I retired 1.5 yrs. ago after working as RN and CRNA for 45 years. I would love to help mentor new nurses but hospitals insist that I should apply for a job. NOopppp. I don't want a job. I can't even volunteer in a clinic to work with the difficult patients who need more time. Now this stupidity only makes my external hide even crustier. I didn't want to work with students, but gave them all my attention because felt obligated. Only ONE irritated me enough for me to snap at. It was her 2 ND month of clinical and we were inserting an LMA into a patient after induction. I asked her to adjust one of her movements during insertion and she gild me that wasn't her preferred way. I said just loud enough for the whole team to hear, "You don't have any preferences. You're here to do this my way and 5 other ways before you go home this evening." And I didn't feel bad about it because the patient was asleep. I think my crusty projections might have had something to do with her not requesting my room again. But other than that I was kind to the students because my instructors were kind to me and they were COB's.

I suspect I was the one who said that if you remember rotary dials, you're probably OLD enough to be a COB. I remember the operator, party lines and phones that one had to crank to get the operator. But anyone old enough to remember those probably already KNOWS they qualify for COB status.

My granny had a rotary phone. Best thing ever.

I had to explain to my children why we "roll" down the windows in the car.

I'm not a COB. I will never be a COB. I dislike cliques of any kind (and I simultaneously shudder and roll my eyes at the idea that there are "cool kids" here). Seeing all the obsequiousness being displayed in this thread is obnoxious.

No matter how many years I will be a nurse, I will never be crusty and grouchy to new nurses.

I am impatient with ineptitude and stupidity, but that's irrespective of my career choice or number of years therein.

I don't know you but you already annoy me. I could list the reasons why but you wouldn't get it.

Ok, hold on a sec, please. klone's ok, this thread just hit her the wrong way and she bowed out awhile ago.

We all have buttons that, when pushed, make us cranky, irritable, or bat-crap crazy. Don't give up on her. She makes good points.
