THE PEOPLE IN MY CLASS ARE DRIVING ME NUTS!!!!!!!!!!

I cannot believe how extremely rude the students are in my chem class. There are about 80 students in the class and I would say 70% of them come in late/leave early/or leave and come back during the class. They talk during lecture, receive calls on their phones, ask questions that have already been answered, talk rudely to the instructor... I could go on and on.

It's embarrassing. It's distracting. And I feel horrible for the instructor. This is her first semester teaching and these students are treating her like dirt.

Those of us who are trying to learn are completely distracted from the door slamming shut every time someone walks in/out.

Is it like this everywhere?? This is my 4th semester and I've never experienced anything like it. I've seen the few who are rude here and there... but this is insane. I'm just curious what in the world is going on?? My other classes weren't quite this large... maybe 50-60 students. So I'm just perplexed why people act this way.

Ugg... just needed to vent I guess. I know somewhere on this site I've posted something similar, I'm sure... :trout:

They treat the instructor as if she's dirt, simply because she permits these students to do so. If she demanded respect, I'd bet that she'd have a more respectful class. The classmates are acting like jerks because they can.

They act this way because someone is allowing them to get away with the uncouth behavior. Your instructor needs to put her foot down and take authority over her class.

I feel your pain.

I have the exact same problem in my chemistry class. There are 180 students and when just a few are "whispering" (I use this term loosely), it can still get very loud and annoying. I can't believe how rude some can be. If they don't like something, they say loudly that it is stupid or ridiculous :angryfire

They whine when they don't understand something, yet they are the ones "whispering" throughout the entire class period. I feel like getting up and telling them that they are adults now so act like it. If you want to learn something, maybe the first thing to do would be to stop talking and try listening. Sorry for the rant, but I get very tired of straining to hear the lecturer everyday. (and I sit in the front row) :uhoh3:

I don't know.... she intimidates the "youknowwhat" out of me! :chair:

While I agree that the instructor needs to assert some more control ... that's a lot easier said than done. Also, her apparent tolerance of the behavior is NO EXCUSE for the students' bad behavior.

The "because they can" excuse is too easy to fall back on. People need to be held accountable for their own choices and not blame others for not punishing them. People should be respectful and curteous even if no one is standing over them waiting to punish them for a mis-step. It's how we behave when "no one is watching" that defines who we really are.

Oh yes I have run into that before too!! Its crazy, I had a class where the girl next to me was text messaging the whole time and smacking her gum, I nearly smacked her LOL.

I am sorry your having to deal with this, have you said anything to the instructor?

Yes, there are a few of us at the end of class that have asked her how she can stand to not blow her stack.... she doesn't say much other than shake her head. I mentioned that she should take attendance at the end of class.

Like I said, this is her first semester teaching. So she probably feels a bit unsure of what to do??? I don't know.

I just think everyone needs to be more respectful. It's really sad actually. Thanks for understanding. It's very frustrating since we have to pay for stuff like this :uhoh3:.

This is what I was thinking. I guess it doesn't matter to me what the instructor is like, I'm still going to behave myself and be respectful.

The funny thing is though, she seems a bit intimidating to me. She must be nearsighted (or far... I don't know the difference) because every time she needs to read something up close she puts her glasses on the end of her nose. You know... the total teacher look. And if you ask a question (that has been asked before) she still answers it but you can tell she is frustrated (and rightfully so as I would be irritated to no end as well). So you would think that would be enough to discourage people from asking something if they haven't been paying attention, but apparently not.

Oh well. Hopefully it will be addressed before the end of the semester.

BTW: She did get a bit mad last night after 1/2 the class left before it ended. She kicked out anyone in the lab that skipped out of class and went over there. So that was nice. At least they can't work on that while missing lecture.

I'm astonished at the poor behavior that I'm seeing in the students that I'm in class with now.

As an undergrad in the early 80's, I didn't see it much at all.

I think it's part of the increasing rudeness that I see in our culture.

You should see this one chick in my psychology class. Talk about wacko!!!:zzzzz

I agree with you. I graduated from college 11 yrs ago and I don't remember it being this bad.

But... here's my thought (please don't flame me for this )

Last year I took Anatomy during fall semester and Physiology in the spring. I also had my CNA class this past summer. So I've had 3 classes so far and I haven't seen this bad of behavior.

Now... I'm in "Intro to Chem" and there are many many more freshmen in my class than what I've had in the past. My A&P classes (and the CNA) were mostly nursing/dental hygiene students. So I guess my concern is the amount of disrespect coming from the younger students of today.

When I was a freshman, I never behaved that way. And of course it is not all freshmen by any means. This is just an observation I'm making and I'm questioning the difference in todays students vs. those from say even 10 yrs ago. Why the shift?? What has happened recently??

I also noticed that the average from our first homework assignment was a D. I actually got 100% so I'm safe... but this assignment was not that hard. And any help I needed I was able to look up/research/ask questions/ and even get from here (thank you music ;)). So now I have to listen to the class complaining of how bad of a teacher she is and how difficult she grades when there is no excuse for getting such a low score on it in the first place. Geesh... I'll stop griping now. I'm just so irritated.

I am so feeling the same way about some of my fellow classmates in physiology! Only my class has 10 people and the instructor's SECOND language is English. While she does have a very thick accent, she was very open about it the first night of class and said for us to feel free to stop her and ask her to repeat things if we don't understand her, which believe me I do, and she is always very nice about it.

There is a girl that sits beside me that feels the need to whisper under her breath every time the prof. mispronounces a word, the correct pronunciation, and then laughs about it to her friend. Then there are two girls behind me that NEVER shut-up:devil:, they talk constantly throughout the whole lecture and then they were mad they flunked our first test last week. Go figure. THEN another girl that's in my class feels the need to talk to the instructor like she is stupid and has no idea what she's talking about, it drives me CRAZY!:banghead: Oh, and I don't want to forget the guy that's in my class that interrupts every 5 minutes to ask what "exactly" is going to be on the test and then gripes because a few ?s that were on the test didn't come directly from the powerpoints.

OK! I really needed to rant! lol, I feel much better now! I usually just tune these people out and worry about myself and my own understanding of the material, but sometimes they just make me want to scream! Alright, Im really done now, I think this thread could be therapeutic.
