Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

THE PEOPLE IN MY CLASS ARE DRIVING ME NUTS!!!!!!!!!!

I cannot believe how extremely rude the students are in my chem class. There are about 80 students in the class and I would say 70% of them come in late/leave early/or leave and come back during the class. They talk during lecture, receive calls on their phones, ask questions that have already been answered, talk rudely to the instructor... I could go on and on.

It's embarrassing. It's distracting. And I feel horrible for the instructor. This is her first semester teaching and these students are treating her like dirt.

Those of us who are trying to learn are completely distracted from the door slamming shut every time someone walks in/out.

Is it like this everywhere?? This is my 4th semester and I've never experienced anything like it. I've seen the few who are rude here and there... but this is insane. I'm just curious what in the world is going on?? My other classes weren't quite this large... maybe 50-60 students. So I'm just perplexed why people act this way.

Ugg... just needed to vent I guess. I know somewhere on this site I've posted something similar, I'm sure... :trout:

It feels good to rant, doesn't it??? :lol2:

I find throwing a few dirty looks usually will help (hey, if they're such inconsiderate people they can't make good friends, right?).

What REALLY gets me is when we're grading a quiz in class or something and people argue right there in class about answers that are obviously wrong. This gem of a conversation happened recently in my anatomy class:

Prof: The answer was supination.

Idiot: I put pronation, is that okay?

Prof: Pronation is the opposite action of supination, so it is wrong.

Idiot: But it's the opposite so I had the right thinking down, right?

Prof: No, it's wrong.

Idiot: But...

Prof: I'm not taking that answer. Please mark it wrong.

It's just that kind of disrespect for someone that really bothers me about it. Nurses do need at least a small amount of respect for patients, but this person (and others like her) seem to have no concept of it.

And this bashing of the younger generations: Yes, I do see it, however this particular person was a 40+ y/o woman who wears scrubs every day to class because she comes straight from her job as a CNA (so she should freakin' know better)....so it's not just us young'uns.

Oh I totally agree! I know there are some older people in there too! I actually remember posting something similar to this last year (about this same time). It was about one person in-particular that would basically harass the instructor over the stupidest things. She was at least 45 yrs old. She wasn't going into nursing (thank the Lord), but needed a biology class for a science requirement for her job in the "business" world (that's what she called it).

Why she took Anatomy as her Bio course is totally beyond me. But she was a piece of work.

I just see it in this Intro class much more than I have in my others. I have a BS degree (from a while ago) so I have had quite a few classes but I just don't recall this behavior.

I had a math teacher a few years ago who dropped a half dozen kids for acting like asses. No problems after that, except the material...

Ahhhh! I dream of the day!! :lol2:

omgosh, Mistiffy!!! Were you in my math class last term???? I was mortified by some of the behavior..and sadly, it wasn't just the young ones!!! Two girls sat behind me, talking constantly. The instructor was forever asking everybody to please be quiet. To my right sat a pair of 30somethings, a guy and a girl. They badgered the teacher with snotty questions. During the class break, the instructor usually left the room and people would start laughing and insulting her.

She was a last minute instructor, spoke with a very heavy Russian accent, was not the 'best' teacher but I thought she did an acceptable job, and sadly, had very poor fashion sense. None of that equaled the abuse she received :( Several of us spoke to her about it and she did try but I was appalled and embarrassed that people, adults, actually acted that childish in the real world.

I had a woman, 40something, a lab partner too, in my last A&P who would "nag" the teacher, about her point total. Often, she would be quibbling over a lousy .25 points on a weekly quiz or something trivial like that!! And everything the teacher said, she had some example to "top" the instructor's example. I have to admit it got annoying after a while!

Grow up, people!!! :trout:

Guess what happened to me last year??? I was in Anatomy and there was this woman (who I've mentioned before). She was in her 40's and extremely rude. She wasn't a Nursing major, just taking the class for a job. Anyway... She constantly hounded the instructor (who was excellent) about stupid stuff... like if he spelled something wrong she would say "Now... how are we suppose to spell it correctly if you spell it wrong?" stuff like that. Anyway, that carried on throughout the semester. There were 3 instructors who taught Anatomy. Ours was a male and it was his first time teaching at our school. (he had taught at other schools in the state though). There was also another female instructor who had taught a few times.

Anyway, we had the opportunity to go to the University to the cadaver lab. It was optional, but we had to sign up for it and we had specific times as to when we could be there. So we were all sitting in the hallway at the U waiting for the instructors to come in and let us go into the lab. The other instructor (the female) was there, but I hadn't seen our teacher yet. She walked down the hall and took attendance to see who was there and who wasn't. She is very good about getting to know her students and their names. I had seen her and had her help me with some things in the lab, but I had never told her my name before. So she walked past the other girls I was with and checked them off and then looked at me and walked past me. She kept going and checking people off and at the end I asked her if she got me. And she said "Yes". I asked her how she knew my name and she said, "I know your name". I again asked her how and she said , "Mary right?" (not the real name she used).... I said no, I'm Jennifer. And she said, "oh I'm sooooo sorry, I'm really sorry" I told her, that's ok. And again, she said "No I'm REALLY sorry".

So after that I didn't think much of it other than she must be a really apologetic person. Until I was in lab a few days afterwards and found out that Mary is the PITA in MY class that always gave the instructor a hard time.

It was interesting to find out that our teacher was telling the other "seasoned" instructors about the people in our class.

Needless to say, I'm glad we got the name thing straightened out, because I had that instructor for Phys the following semester....haha

LOL! I could've been! I forgot to mention that our first test was over the first 7 chapters and let me tell you the gripes and groans coming from these people in my class about this. I am the youngest person in the class at 22 and I am just appalled by these people's attitudes. They griped so much about the test being over 7 chapters that the instructor actually went ahead and split it up into two parts, so we had the first 4 chapters on monday and the last 3 on wednesday. And that;s fine and all that she went ahead and did that, I mean she's the instructor and that's her perogative, but Im just thinking how in the HECK are these people going to survive in nursing school when there's not someone there to hold their hands!

I really try not to let it get to me, but it just irritates me sometimes! lol, like I said it does feel good to rant sometimes!
