I haven't seen anyone start a thread about applying for this year's HRSA scholarships. I am waiting to see if I am accepted into a school in IL (fingers crossed!) and then I am going to start my application process for HRSA. The program I am applying to is a 16 months ABSN that starts in august! what about you all?
Have you been accepted some where yet? Still in the application process? Already started the Scholarship application?
I just spoke with someone. Here is what I got. I’m not saying anyone is wrong or believe me over what the next person says. What I’m telling you is. I called. Today. Less than 5 mins ago and from the questions I asked. I received this.
If the application had errors, you would not have went “under review” (which is consistent with what I was told on here)&
For those “under review” folks… Basically what happens is, the applicants who have advanced (from thier respectful tier groups), were considered a priority or had a stronger score than you, so you are set as reserves and if someone who was selected, does NOT respond in time with the proper documentation or drops off of school, then they will go back to the application pool, And start again. All this will occur before Sept 30th. So, if you didn’t get anything yet. Make sure you check your tier group, have credit unlocked, and keep checking inbox and spam folders. If it’s something you really want, maybe tried to get on a payment plan for this first semester and go from there, because if you do get it, you’ll be reimbursed.
but there is a limit of the amount of money the can spend. It is not an unlimited pool of money. So, out of caution, they don’t accept everyone because as you know, everyone’s program costs are not the same and some are ranging from 20k to 6 figures. So, to say 250-256 (which is the number range expected / likely to get the scholarship. Ongoing AND new) who have a program cost of 100,000 would get it, let’s be realistic. Thats over 25 millions dollars. The government isn’t allocating that for people’s education. And mind you, it’s NP’s, and other practitioners getting this too so 100k is generous to give a example from.
all that being said, don’t feel like you have it in the bag. Because that’s not the case but don’t feel like you have no hope either because there is still a chance for us , undergoes folks. My EFC was over 13k, so I definitely wouldn’t be a priority anyways. I worked two jobs last year, and that’s probably why. But, there are people with EFC with a 0 that are in the same boat as me.
I want people to accept things as the are and not have false hope or no hope at all. Or, however you want to be, then be that way. It’s only a suggestion from me.

I agree if programs cost $100k plus HRSA can’t give out as many scholarships. To get more nurses in underserved populations giving scholarships to programs 60k,50k and lower will get more nurses out to those communities.

Spoke to an HRSA agent again and she said literally the only thing that will disqualify someone from receiving the scholarship is federal debt, criminal history and a non nursing program. Do any of y'all actually know anyone who got a denial letter for this scholarship past or currently?
She said that's rare and I'm praying she's not pulling my leg. She said the reason some of us haven't heard back yet is because they award based on priority which has nothing to do with Tiers. That's strange since they made us believe that in the packet. They award based on troubled background, low income, and score in your area based on need for your specialty. That explains why there is no recipient order based on degree type.
I asked her how would they know someone had a troubled background and if it was based on the essays. She said no; there is a form you can download off the site and have your school's financial aid office fill out confirming stuff like you're a minority, have obstacles holding you back from attaining your degree, etc. I've never heard of that form, but she said it's there and we had the option to add it to our app under additional documents. Smh.
So the people getting awarded first probably included additional documents to prove extenuating circumstances, and/or the area they live in is in desperate need of their specialty.
If you are in Tier 1 and meet the EFC, you have nothing to worry about. They just fund people who checked off what I've explained above first.
Then it sounds like after you receive the finalist email, there's an additional process before the funds are distributed. Make sure you have a way to cover yourself financially at least till the end of October.
An alternative option: Every state has a WIOA program that grants money to all adults in a technical program. Nursing qualifies. They came to our school practically begging ppl to apply. Just submit your initial nursing school acceptance letter at your local WIN Job center and tell them you want to apply for that grant. You have to submit it to them in either October or November if you just started your program in the fall. They'll start paying in January. They do not pay for your first semester of nursing school. Not sure how it works for those who are already licensed. They pay for everything as well, but no stipend....BUT at the same time, no 2 year commitment. I prefer nurse corp, but that's my back up and for whoever else needs one ?
Yes, many students in my program received denial letters last Spring, none had any defaulted loans or debt. In fact, no one in my program was awarded. There were students with 0 EFC and all had high GPAs (3.8+). I don’t know why she would tell you that denials are rare when they get thousands of applicants but can only award around 250ish.

I still haven't heard from them/ haven't had my credit checked and I could've sworn my app would've been prioritized because my program is super cheap with an efc of 0 because I haven't had a stable job since covid, but thankfully have been able to afford to live on savings. I can't continue to keep paying for school out of pocket any longer though. I do not qualify for any more financial aid, lots of state grants, etc. because this is my second degree.
I have been watching this forum day in and day out. I received a credit check on August 6th and while I was so discouraged this past week, I didn’t know God was behind the scenes working on my behalf! I indeed received a finalist email today! TO ANYONE WHO HAS NOT HEARD ANYTHING YET,, I just wanted to say, YOUR NAME IS ON ONE. claim it, because it’s already yours! Good luck to everyone and please don’t lose hope!
