Hrsa 08-09 Nursing Scholarship

Published

I thought I would start a thread for those who have applied, do that we can keep each other posted on what is going on with the process. Also here to promote tons of positivity for everyone.

I applied for this scholarship for this school year and the last school year. Because this is a government program it goes by your income. I didn't get it last year because I am not eligible for the pell grant because I work. This year it was the same exact situation even though I am working part-time now (making less money). I don't think they should go by your income status from the previous year to be eligible for the scholarship. They should go by the current income.

:)Hopefully, as time goes by this scholarship will be a given to all nursing students, as long as they complete the program. But of course there would be more restrictions on qualifications but if we stay hopeful and then when we are working nurses establish scholarships for future nurses, this will not be an issue( financial aid). Just think about all the potential scholarships that could be out there is every nurse once working formed a scholarship in their local area. Just a thought. Other than that everyone should stay positive,think good thoughts and enjoy the rest of our summer break.

that's what i thought too....that most hospitals would qualify, but i called and asked about a few hospitals that i would want to work for and they do not qualify. it's hospitals that are in a shortage area....

http://hpsafind.hrsa.gov/hpsasearch.aspx

in this county, only a small part of the city qualifies and i have no clue what places they are thinking are there that need nurses....it's all low income housing there, definitely no hospitals. and then there are extremely rural areas that i could work for, which would mean an hour drive from where i live. :-( so that's what i gathered from it.....if i'm wrong please tell me. i would really like to be wrong about it.

ok, yay, you're wrong!

the hpsa list you are looking under has nothing to do with hrsa nursing scholarship recipients. although i'll certainly admit they do make it confusing....that list is geared more for payback and scholarships for advanced practitioners(md, do, np, dd) not this nursing scholarship. (though any place on this smaller listing will, of course, work for hrsa payback as well).

i think this faq answers the question pretty well(i bolded what should be most relevant):

nursing scholarship eligible health facilitiestrnsp.gif question what is an eligible health facility or critical shortage facility where nursing scholarship program recipients can fulfill the service obligation?trnsp.gif

answer the nursing scholarship program does not decide where participants fulfill their service obligation to the program. scholars are free to select any facility, in any u.s. state, district of columbia or u.s. territory, that is one of the following:

    1. indian health service health centers;
    2. native hawaiian health centers;
    3. hospitals;
    4. federally qualified health centers (including look alike health centers);
    5. rural health clinics;
    6. nursing homes;
    7. home health agencies;
    8. hospice programs;
    9. state or local public health departments including public health clinics within the departments;
    10. skilled nursing facilities; and
    11. ambulatory surgical centers.

for the purposes of the nursing scholarship program, all of these types of facilities have critical shortages of nurses and are eligible health facilities where nursing scholarship recipients can fulfill their minimum two-year service obligations.

it's the critical shortage of nurses(read everywhere currently-though we do know better not to confuse the topic at hand) not of "health professions" that is key here. and yeah, it is a little insulting when you think about it but who really cares?

just from my own experience as a past recepient not that long ago, i am from the sf bay area and pretty much everywhere i wanted to apply counted. for example, stanford, ucsf, kaiser's, sutter's, etc. actually, all the major employers i can think of. looking back there wasn't one i thought of applying to that didn't count.

anyway, this scholarship is a really good deal if you are able to get it and i hope this makes it at least a little easier to understand.

oh yeah, just so all the hopefuls don't end up with ami's before this thing is done, let me remind you that historically(up to and including last year) they don't tell recipients until after september(i think i found out the 13th or something) that you got it. it makes the first month or so of school a little more tricky and stressful but that's just the way it goes. please don't freak out now and expect any news. just have your back up plans in place. many schools will back off on demanding tuition or drop, for example, if you show that you're in the running for this well known program with appropriate doc. to prove it.

good luck!!!

I know when I received it last year, I went ahead and took out my subsidized and unsubsidized loans....the school held onto the loan money until I knew anything about my scholarship. When I received the scholarship, the school sent back my loans and had them canceled...and just like Miss Mab stated above..I also did not hear until after September 1...I know it will seem like forever, but it is worth it if you get it....and yes, make other arrangements in case you do not because it is such a small number that do get it. GOOD LUCK TO ALL

Last year is was 1 in 3 of first funding preference that were awarded so not completely hopeless

Both times I have asked them they have said notification is going out August 1st, which is next friday. So selections should be being made this week.

Now if you're chosen as an alternate don't give up hope as they will send out rejections by October 31 so you're still in the running until then.

Hopefully we'll receive e-mails next week for the school direct deposit based on posts for last year.

we estimate that 220 new qualified applicants will be selected to receive the scholarship in fy 2008 and that all will be from the first funding preference group:

  • have a zero expected family contribution (efc) on the student aid report from the free application for federal student assistance (fafsa) and
  • are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an undergraduate nursing program as full-time students
  • more funding preference information from the applicant information bulletin

last year's applicants

  • 4,894 eligible applications
  • 574 applicants with first preference for funding
  • 172 applicants given scholarship awards

Wow, I did not know that the notifications were going out this week! Let's Stay Positive that all of us get awarded!:smilecoffeecup:

Hello All! I was telling my cousin about this scholarship and she wants to apply next year. The only problem is that she defaulted on a student loan over 10 years ago due to my aunt being ill. It has since been paid off and she does not owe any federal debts. Does anyone know of anyone who has received this scholarship after defaulting on a past student loan?

I think you cannot be currently in default on a loan...I believe as long as she has cleared it up it will be ok

Thank you. I will let her know.I wasn't quite sure because there is that portion on the bulletin that asks if you've ever defaulted on a federal debt. Thanks a bunch!

just wanted to let ya'll know as i am the one who posted aug 1st as the date letters go out it is not the case. my e-mail below is to the director of the program. i called again after this to ask the call center on the timeline and they still claim that letters are going out august 1st which confirms my suspicions that they are clueless (when i got the e-mail from cdr gabrel i called to confirm it was from hrsa as it didn't include any confirmation info to provide other than school and name and they said they didn't know who she was and no e-mails were sent out.)

her response: no, we are still process the applications

my question: cdr gabrel,

are award letters still scheduled to go out on august 1st as your call center says? i understand last year there was additional paperwork e-mailed with a 48 hour turnaround time, will this happen this year as well and what is the timeline for that?

thank you so much,

so just wanted to let you know it looks like it'll be a while yet.:bluecry1:
