HRSA Nurse Corps Scholarship 2020-2021

Published

I havent seen a thread yet on this year's nurse corps application cycle & my anxiety has made me start one. I'm finishing up my application and should be done with it by today. I know its extremely competitive so honestly I dont think I'll get it but its worth a try! Who else has applied/is applying?

Hi! I was wondering if anyone here was accepted for either primary or acute care adult geriatrics? I’m worried when I apply this year they will not accept due to being restricted to adults?

I don’t think it’s about not getting accepted, it’s the tier that if you were selected you would qualify for. I’m in an FNP program and I believe FNP and PMHNP qualify for tier 1 scholarship.

Hi everyone! I applied last cycle for the Nurse Corp scholarship but unfortunately didn't get it. I was wondering if anyone who did receive the scholarship last year would be willing to give advice on essays/general application tips! Thanks SO much in advance ? In a super expensive direct entry program and kind of drowning in costs right now haha so any advice is so appreciated.

Hi everyone! I got into UPenn for their ABSN/MSN Program. Their program is super expensive and it's stressing me out so much right now. I'm the first in my family to attain a higher education and the first one to receive an education from an Ivy League so I really want to go to this program. I'm not receiving any help from my parents so I really hope I get this scholarship. The main reason why I chose nursing in the first place is because I want to provide care to marginalized and underserved communities in the future. But because I just graduated from undergrad a year ago, I don't have many experiences. I only have 1.5 years volunteering as a scribe at a free clinic, 1.5 years at a school-based health center, and 3 months worth of shadowing providers at rural villages in Mexico. These are really the only experiences I have in terms of working for underserved communities. I got a 3.34 GPA from undergrad. I'm not sure if they also take into account classes post-grad but for that, I have about 3.8 GPA. What are my chances of getting in?

congrats on getting into UPenn! I think you have a good chance based on your experience but honestly almost everyone that applies has a good chance but some still don't get it. sooo my best advice to give is to write the helll out of your essays & make sure whoever writes your recommendations can really sell you!! & the fact that you are the first in your fam to obtain higher education and go to an ivy league is amazing. in terms of GPA they only care about the most recent school u went to I believe or the most recent semester, something like that. I graduated in 2018 with my BS but finished two prereqs at another school before applying to nursing school and they only wanted the transcript from the school I did my prereqs at. I still went ahead and submitted my undergrad transcript but they honestly didn't want it LOL. my prereq GPA was 3.9 my undergrad GPA was 3.6. GOOD LUCK!!

Oh my gosh, this made me feel so relieved. I'll for sure keep these things in mind. Thank you so much for your insights! ❤️  I appreciate it!

Hi @chelsea21! (sorry allnurses is not letting me message anyone privately for some reason) I just have another question: for the academic letter of recommendation, did you have to ask your post-undergrad professor (when you took your prereqs) OR did you get it from your undergrad professor? I know they said in the application to ask from the "most recent academic program" but IDK if undergrad counts as most recent ?

hey I asked one of my undergrad professors

Hey! This thread was for all of us who applied to the scholarship during the last cycle! I’m sure there is valuable information on previous post. Best of luck to you!

Hi,

I have a question regarding how to file taxes for the nurse corps scholarship when you attend nursing school outside of your permanent residence. Since we are considered "employers" according to the IRS would I need to pay taxes as a "nonresident" in the state that I attend school? If anyone has the same situation any help would be so appreciated. Thanks!

Hi I’m not in the same situation, but I saw this. To clarify, you’re “employed” by HRSA located in Maryland, not the school. I think you’d pay federal taxes on HRSA and then your state of residence tax.

Thanks so much...
