I couldn't stand the way Wilford Brimley pronounced it, so I'm very careful to enunciate it carefully. "Dye-a-beet-eez".

At work we refer to it as "The Beetis."

Die-ya-bee-teez I say "I have Type 1 die-ya-bee-teez" I hate it when people say "dia-ya-beat-us" lol.

I hear professionals and experts in the field pronounce it both ways. I prefer to say it the first way. "die-ya-bee-teez"

The Wilford Brimley video made me laugh. Blast from the past! Anyone remember John Goodman doing a spoof of the Liberty commercials on SNL? I tried to post the link but it didn't work. Search it on YouTube.

This is slightly off-track but when I was in nursing school in Cambridge, Mass., we had a sweet lil' South Carolinian teacher, and it threw me off when she started talking about "Tuba-Tooze". Took me a few minutes to figure out she was talking about 2x2 gauze pads!

Specializes in CVICU.

We had an instructor in Fundamentals pronounce it 'dia-bee-tus'. We were very entertained. I personally pronounced 'dia-bee-deez'.

I think I'm just going to start calling it "The Sugar"

Have waited to see this subject here since the day I joined this site and all the time that I lurked prior! I tend to do it like those who mimic the other people in the conversation. Just a habit.

I posted a poll for you. :)

Where is the poll? I don't see it.

My Gramma always called it Sugar Diabeetus.:) I agree that it's probably a regional thing.
