I'm new and going to be applying for nursing school this summer. How do you all pay for you nursing school? Is there special scholorships out there for future nurses?

Hi. There are plenty of scolarships out there. scholarships.com is a good place to start. There are other web sites that help you to find scholarships as well. ANA is also a good place to checkout. they offer specific scholarships to those that want them. I went the studnet loan route or I would never have been here. Good luck in your search!:)

Tumblebug,

I will be starting my second semester of nursing in January. This semester I am getting grants from WIA (Workforce Investment Act) through my state of Kansas. Prior to finding out about WIA, I applied for Stafford loans. WIA pays $3,000 a year and it's money you do not have to pay back. It does not go off of your income, either. If you are 21 years old or younger, the money is guaranteed (or at least in Kansas this was the case). I am 32 years old, but I still qualified.

I would start by doing a search on the internet for WIA under the state you live in and go from there. It didn't take me long to get the grant. I applied the week before Christmas and they told me the money would be at my school before Spring Semester started.

Unfortunately, the financial aid department at my school knew nothing about this grant (which doesn't surprise me)!

I hope this helps. Feel free to e-mail or PM me if you have additional questions. Good luck!

Hospital Scholarship. Pays books, tuition, and any leftover goes in my pocket!

Ask your nursing department who to talk to in financial aid. Also, check with local hospitals by looking on their websites or calling HR.

They often come with a work commitment after graduation (1-2 years) so make sure you investigate the hospital before taking a scholarship from them. You'll want it to be a hospital you'll like working at.

This is a blessing for us because otherwise, we wouldn't be able to afford to send me to school.

I am paying tuition and books and tools with gov't loans. And what sucks is that if I get a job then whatever I make is deducted from what the gov't will loan me. So I am damend if I do and damned if I don't. :o I just wanna be done school so I can pay these damn loans back and start making my own money!

Oh and I forgot to add that I have looked far and wide at the scholarship sites and am either unable to apply to them or the one or two I did apply for I never got. :( It's just so frustrating being a student these days! Sorry to vent. :stone

academic scholarship is one way that has helped me through school. ask at your school for various options.

Cash. At least it's tax deductible. :coollook:

Hi,

I am paying mostly from student loans, but I did just get a scholarship which I never thought would happen! my best advice is to get a nurses aide position P/T. a little experience for the resume and tuition reimbursement program might help. although most hospitals in my area require a minimum of 20 hrs per week to be eligible which can be tough in a difficult course like nursing. GOOD LUCK!!!

I am paying out of my own pocket. I already have a degree so I didn't qualify for a government loan, my husband makes too much for me to get any aid and all the scholarships I've seen are based on grades and financial need, so even though I have a 4.0, I don't qualify.

I understand not getting any financial aid, there are many people who need it more than me, but what I don't understand is why I can't get a subsidized student loan. They told me because I already have a BA and am now in an ADN program, I can't get a loan because I have too many credit hours to qualify. What does the number of credit hours have to do with getting a loan? Sorry about the vent but it makes me nuts!
