Hi All, I am a nursing student in a hospital based AD program. I just read an article in the last issue of advance for nurses magazine about a proposed law in New York State that would mandate that a nurse get a BSN within 10 yrs of graduating school or they would have to practice under an LPN license. I imagine if it passed other states would soon follow. In some respects I am against it because it was being proposed under the guise that ADN nurses would no longer continue their education and I believe getting certifications, in service training and CE credits will be more productive than another 50 credits in non nursing subjects and approx 9 credits in actual nursing classes to complete my BSN. I do intend on completing my BSN only because I do feel masters programs for nurses are beneficial and you need to have it to get in a program but I really feel that for bedside nursing getting more certifications and the like are a more productive and useful way to go initially after school. Just a quick THANK YOU to all the nurses who take the time to teach the students they come in contact with a little something!!! Love ya all!!!

Hi, My sister-in-law had a kidney transplant about 3 1/2 yrs ago. Medicare paid for not only for her surgery but also for my other sister-in-laws surgery who donated the kidney. The reason medicare was so willing to do this was because of the extremly exhorbinant cost of dialysis estimated at approx. $55,000 a month!!!! where as the surgery and follow up for 1 yr was about $75,000 total. I do not know why the other conditions are not covered but in this case it seems like a financially practical thing to do. (Its nice to know that sometimes the financially practical thing to do is best for the patient!!!)

Hi, A few things that work for me are 1. Scan the chapter 1st flip through each page look at the headings get a good feel for whats going to be covered in the chapter. 2. Alot of nursing books are laid out with a review of anatomy and then follow the nursing process. Each section of the nursing process is a natural break to step back absorb what you just read. 3. Ignore all the text boxes, diagrams and charts until after you have read the chapter than go back and read all the charts, text boxes after you finished reading the chapter. This does two things it allows you to read more with out getting side tracked on topics that may not directly relate to what you are reading at the time and it also allows you to review sections that you may have missed the first time. 4. write notes in the margins and read the chapter summaries at the end of the chapters. 5. read to understand the first time you read the chapter, memorize later. Hi Everyone, I am a student nurse about to begin my OB rotation. I am from a theory standpoint looking forward to it but was wondering if anybody could give me an idea what the reaction might be to a male nurse from patients. Do you think they will be accepting or will I be making anyone uncomfortable? Thanks for your help!!!
