Just wondering how much PTO all the full-time nurses get and how many years of service you have? I'm curious about all fields of RN work - hospital, sub-acute, CM, insurance, etc.
I've been at my current insurance company for 2 years and get 19 days a year (that includes vacation/sick/floating holiday).
Some formula of multiplying hours worked by a percentage to figure hours. The more seniority the higher the percentage used to calculate hours. Max of 240 can be carried and at end of year up to 160 can be carried over.
I've been there for 20+ years and have been maxed out on the PTO accrual formula for quite some time. I always manage to use all my PTO, before my employer changed ownership we had a use it or lose it policy so I'm not used to carrying anything over. Depending on if I work any OT I accrue between 7.5 and 9 hours a pay period plus I get an initial load of 60 hours based on years of service. It works out to be about 33 days a year. We are expected to use our PTO for vacation and sick time. Holiday pay is separate and we have 7 paid holidays so that bumps total paid days to 40.
PTO at my work is accumulated according to a percentage of work hrs per pay period. The longer a person has worked there, the higher the percentage & faster PTO is earned. When I started, I earned about 5 hrs per pay period. Now, it's usually between 8 to 9 depending on how many hrs I worked. It also rolls over each yr; I have about 190 hrs last I looked.
That sound like the way my employer does it. For new employees working full time, it adds up to about 3.5 weeks per year. For people who have been here 10 years, you max out at a rate that equals about 6 weeks per year. That's in addition to 6 official holidays.
That's more than I need ... and in my job, it's hard to be gone that much as the work just piles up when I am not at work. We used to be able to cash in some of our unused PTO and that was great. I sold my regularly to increase my income. But now we have to take it or lose it -- which means I lose some each year.
At the crap-hole job I currently have (for another week), I get a whopping 5 days per year. I had to be employed full-time for a year, then was so graciously gifted those days.
But the kicker is, I can't use more than one day at a time. They will "let" me take a "vacation" using my one PTO day and one unpaid day. So I am limited to a long 4-day weekend and nothing else.
If you're sick, you just don't get paid. Of course Aflac will kick in after 7 days for short-term disability, but a regular sickness or illness screws your paycheck.
It is a privately owned RTC in Texas. I made my one year anniversary in March.
I've been nursing almost 20 years and never had such **** PTO benefits.
Needless to say, I'm looking forward to better benefits with a new company.

You were prn. PRNs don't get benefits and aren't valid for measuring averages
