We called up the "backhole digger" for patient's that were "all dobbed up." That would be the number one reason folks would call. The baby ain't dookied all day, you know.

Do you guys disimpact in the ER? Some of our docs will make us, others will actually admit the patient and have it done upstairs in the privacy of their own room. We don't have toilets in each ED room and some of the rooms just have curtains, so it can be a "quite fragrant" experience for other patients and embarrassing for the disimpactee...just curious as to how it is handled elsewhere.

Lori,

A code brown cart would include hipwaders, "evening gloves" possibly up to tha axilla, towels, butt spray, a suction cannister and a yankauer catherter. A nose clip of some sort. A mop for those that produce ROS (river of $hit). Have code browns all the time in the unit. They are either impacted or swimmin down the hall! At least you guys can get rid of these patients fast! We have them for months at a time!!! hmmm.maybe I'll have to think about transferring....

Lilgirl,

I don't know about the ER but I work in an 18 bed neuro ICU OPEN unit. NO toilets in the unit. Its either in the bed, on the bed pan, up to a bedside camode chair, or the ever popular "scoop and thump" However it comes out-- EVERYBODY knows about it. We actually had one alert patient who ran out of the unit when her neighbor had a major code brown.

My hubby was working the ED when an elderly gentleman came in complaining that he was behind on his BM's. Alert and oriented though anxious, abdomen flat and soft and non-tender. His C/O? Had a bm today that was yesterdays and the day before's was supposed to be from the day before that. KUB and flat plate nl.

Dispense reassurance and discharge to home, but we still have a standing joke about "being behind on your BM's"

Hey! Here in Queensland Australia a "Code Brown" is part of the emergency response protocols and it means there is an external emergency. I have often wondered wheter tehy called it a code brown because that is when teh provebial hit the rotating object?

My sister live with me while she was doing her residency in IM. She was moonlighting for a group who didn't want to do call. She got more than a few phone calls at 12:05 from parents who cliamed the child was consipated. Why at 12:05?, cause then there was no BM in 24 hours (you know midnight to midnight). Talk about panic! Oh no the baby has poopy problems.

I have a pt who is taking, are you ready, 320mg oxycontin TID and percodan for breakthrough. He has been a long-term sickle cell, 62 yr old now, with most of his hip joints degenerated and severe pain in hips and back as a result. But, he gets so constipated. No matter what we try. I just reordered his lactulose, b/c he hadn't moved his bowels in 10 days, so he drank the whole bottle, had a code brown. I told him, if you don't take your reglan and lactulose regularly, we're going to have to stick dynamite up your a$$!! He got a kick out of that! Little does he know, I'm, seriously considering it!!! LOL!

The finniest poop expression came from Fat Ba$tard in Austin Powers, "The turtle's head is poking out!" and "I have a crap on deck that could choke a donkey!" I die laughing when I see that part!!
