How many men in your cohort?

Published

We had Nursing orientation today and I had my first opportunity to meet my fellow students. It turns out there are only 3 men including me in our class of 45. How many men are in your cohort?

If it's unofficial, then how do you know that it's true? Not trying to pick a fight, but, is this an assumption? Word of mouth? Have you experience in Nursing School Admissions beyond that of a student?

Well I can't really prove it but like I said, they can't admit it openly because that's a form of gender discrimination which as I said before is quite illegal.

With that said, its always been hinted by advisors, instructors, and graduates of the program that while its not expressed in the application packet "Males and minorities will have priority acceptance", they strive for diversity when it comes to acceptance.

Community and state colleges receive funding from the state. So they get grants and scholarships based on the demographics of the school, the same way we get scholarships for being those demographics. So they need males in female dominated programs, blacks, Spanish, Asians, whatever to get more money.

Private colleges like keiser for example, are funded by the students. That's why tuition is so high. They get all the money they need from you. So there is no priority and no need for demographic dispersion because they don't need the money. They just need to attract students to pay out the cash to stay in business. That's why requirements are generally more lax when it comes to entrance and they can cut down the length of their semesters and overall programs.

This is stuff I generally assumed for a while but the latter was confirmed when I went to a plan b private college and got some info in case I didn't get into my first pick. He explicitly told me

"Look, you're a male going into nursing. And you're black. Don't take that the wrong way but the college here would eat you u as long as you score decent on your pre-entrance exam. So if I were you I'd give them a shot just to see, before you shell out all your money over here. But that's just me. Keep that between us by the way".

So while I can't give you a bona fide legit yes, I'm going to say in my opinion, it definitely helps against your less...diverse competition Lol.

That was a very well thought out reply. Thank you, I appreciate hearing your opinion on the matter. I'm not saying that I completely disagree, but I just feel so dirty of the idea being true.

I know what you mean. At first I didn't like it either, but then I came to the conclusion that having a competitive edge is everything when it comes to careers these days. So if having 6 fingers or a webbed toe means I'm more desirable for school and employment, I'll take it haha

Just me and 20 girls, so that is a shade under 5%.

We started with 3 out of 36; now we are down to 2 out of 26.

Had orientation last Friday and saw my classmates for the first time, there are 4 of us guys out of about 25. Interesting we're all above 5'11 with athletic/muscular builds, I wouldn't expect the other 3 to be interested in nursing just judging from appearance, they look like meat heads lol

@StudentManNurse - this reply made me laugh! What is a male nurse SUPPOSED to look like? The men I work with on my unit (3 nurses) are all very strong and "masculine" looking! LOL! It is quite nice to have them as partners when boosting patients up in bed because it is so much easier...

Also, the two men in my nursing program are one former Marine and a former HS Wrestler/Professional Rodeo rider. Both pretty "manly," I would say.

Not trying to pick a fight - just thought it was funny that you expected them to look/be different! Also putting the word "manly" in quotation marks because everyone has different ideas of what is "manly." My husband loves theater and is a great cook and he is the manliest man I know!

I envy you all lol

I my second to last semester and we have 9 out of 97. We lost about 4 though.
