How long was/is your orientation?

Mine is 16 weeks at a pediatric hospital. The first 3 weeks were classroom (required for everyone, team building and skills review....fun stuff!) and I get 12 weeks with a preceptor. From talking to experienced RNs, they get about the same. Really the only difference is my hospital has a new grad residency program for the first year. It's 4 hours a month.

Mine is a Versant program which lasts 18 weeks. 2 classroom days and 2 clinical days with a preceptor each week.

10 weeks on my pediatric surgery floor. A few other floors in the hospital have more... The first week is a lot of classroom, the rest of the weeks have about 3days/week on the floor and one in the classroom.

I work med-surg and mine was 6 wks. It was origionally 4 wks and I asked for 2 more. I applied for an ER residency that I didn't get and it would have been 16 wks. I think 12 wks is pretty good though.

One week in a classroom, and 12 weeks with a preceptor on a telemetry floor. 12 weeks seems to be pretty standard with the hospitals in this part of the country (western NY).

8 weeks on a post-surgical unit. I start on my own tomorrow! eek!

As a new grad I'm getting 12 weeks with a preceptor on a med/surg floor. In addition, I have a nurse residency class for new grads once a month for 4 hours for a year.

I'm on a med surg floor and it's minimum of 6 weeks and if I'm not comfortable at that point it can be a maximum of 8 weeks!

Mine was two weeks, which surprisingly was enough. Of course I would have happily accepted more, but here I am 3 months into my first job and I feel good about how I'm doing as a new grad RN. I'm working on a Subacute rehab floor so 2 weeks is pretty standard. I have a very supportive environment so I still ask tons of questions but mostly I'm on my own!

For ICU I had 12 weeks. By week 8, I thought I was ready to be on my own... Then during my first week on my own I was having second thoughts! I think after about 8 months I started feeling like everything I had been learning was making sense... then it was time to learn more! :)

16 to 20 weeks in the ER

We also have to go to critical care class full time for a month (which is on top of the hours for orientation not instead of)

coming up to the home stretch...but still encountering new things everyday

I received 8 weeks on a surgical floor. This was five years ago...the same new grad would receive 12 weeks now.

Specialized areas like OR, ED, ICU...they receive 6 months. There is also a MedSurg internship that is four months long. I think that is overkill but it's a neat concept - the new grads orient on three or four different floors and also are able to take a bunch of classes, have a day with the IV nurse, that kind of thing. There just wasn't time to fit all of that in on my orientation.
