Hello all. My wife is in her first semester of nursing school and needs a 76% to pass her classes. She is getting about 72% right now with I think a test and a final left. While this is far from insurmountable, I would love be able to help her as much as I can. What can I do to assist her studying? I know when I went through paramedic school, what helped me was purchasing multiple study guides and as long as I could answer all the questions in them, I did great on the tests. Is this something that would help a nursing student do better? How have your husbands/wives helped you? Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks

The best thing you can do for your wife is encourage her and give her the free time to study. Such as...(and you may do this anyway), fix supper, clean house, wash dishes, run errands, take care of the kids (if you have any). Sometimes we have this need to do everything and feel guilt when we don't.
I think purchasing several study guides at this point would just overwhelm her. She should have what she needs already...her notes and books from the semester.
This is just from my point of view being a female, wife, and mother and successful graduated nurse. Best wishes to your wife! Very sweet of you to seek help. Kudos to you!

If she is as willing, you can have a study session right there.
1. Ask her what she learned in lecture... have her go into detail.
2. When she figures out her weak points, she can review those.
Then. Have her teach YOU all that stuff. Since you have background, but weren't there, you are a good person to 'instruct'. Nothing makes a person learn faster than knowing they have to explain it to someone else!
This is if she is willing, of course. :)

Great idea! The best way to learn sometimes if you talk it out and having her explain it to you will solidify it a little better!

Awww how sweet and thoughtful of you!!!!! I had to take a double take cause my husband is also a paramedic :) We help each other quite a bit he started paramedic school a semester before I started nursing school, of course he is already done. Anyhow... I think the easiest and best thing my husband does is help out extra around the house and any thing is very helpful. That way she can just concentrate on school.

Just let her know you love her and support her. Ask her if there is anything you can do. Let her know that no matter what she will be a nurse and you'll be there every step of the way! :redpinkhe

Basing this off of my experience: Don't be needy. Understand the love she has toward her family is always on her mind; she is not purposely neglecting anyone.

It's very refreshing to see someone so supportive of their spouse (a lot of my married classmates don't have that). I have a classmate who I knew long before nursing school and we're very close. She was struggling a lot when we first started and she was having a pretty rough time doing well on our exams. We started studying together and I noticed that when I offered her my view on certain concepts and practices from a "male perspective" it helped her put all the pieces together and it would just kind of click for her after that. I've learned that our perspectives combined help us both understand the material in a well rounded way and we did really well on our exams after a study session together. We are now able to spend less time studying and we do much, much better on our exams than we did in the beginning. You might be able to help her by offering your perspective on the content so that she can get a more well rounded grasp of the information. Nursing school tests have a lot to do with perception. I think that if she is able to process the information in a way that she can see things from both sides, it will help her eliminate the wrong answers and choose the best answer come test time. Hope that makes since and I wish your wife luck!
