How hard is stats compared to A&P?

Published

I'm trying to figure out if I will be able to take statistics and english comp 1 this summer while working full time...

Last semester I took A&P 1 online while working full time and managed a 4.0 GPA but it took a lot of time to achieve (2-3 hrs/day).

How hard/time consuming is online statistics for someone with pretty strong math skills compared to A&P?

How hard/time consuming is ENC 1101?

Thanks

Hi!

in my experience stat was a lot less of a time commitment. You have to really pay attention in class and understand concepts rather then the memorization that takes up the majority of A&P

Im also working full time and found stat to be easier. A lot of teachers provide study guides and cheat sheets are are helpful as well

I'm a relatively smart individual and I had a hard time with stats online. I'm certain if I had taken it in person, I'd have done much better, as it was my first C. But that could be a combination of me just not getting it, the program teaching me how to solve with excel (though we had to use a calculator on tests, and the teacher never taught us calculator use) and my teacher in general (not bad, just not overly helpful).

So I know people can do much better than I can, given better circumstances (and perhaps math smarts).

Good luck!

I struggled more in stats than in A&P but math has never come easy to me. I took A&P in person and it was a big time commitment I would say that I spent far less time on my hybrid stats class. I ended up with an "A" in both courses, but feel

that I have retained much more of the A&P knowledge.

I am strong in math and actually enjoy it. While Stats has calculations in it, it is more about the interpretation/analysis of said calculations. The interpretations drove. me. NUTS. For reference, I took AP II, Microbiology, and Statistics last semester and my hardest class was Stats. I spent most of my study time on this class. I had a similar experience to Jen: took it online, forced to use a certain computer program the entire semester, then told 2 days before the final that not only did we have to come to campus to take it but we were only allowed to use our calculators. I ended up with a 93.18 (4.0=93.0, no rounding) which genuinely surprised me because I walked out of the final in tears as I was convinced I had bombed it.

English Composition is as hard and time-consuming as your instructor makes it. At my school, some instructors only add a couple of assignments to the department requirements while others load up on a ton of "busy work" assignments.

At my school, we have two 7-week summer session with a week break in-between them. However, certain classes that begin in the first session runs the full 15 weeks. If you have the option, I would take Stats for 15 weeks. If English is only offered in a 7 week (or whatever short length) format, I would take it in the first summer session. In my Stats class, the first couple weeks were deceptively easy (finding mean, mode, median, etc). It was more so right before the midterm where things started to get a little uncomfortable for me.

I took A&P 1 seated and had to devote a lot of time to maintain good grades. Also, my entire purpose wasn't solely on making sure to get good grades but also make sure that I was able to fully understand the material and be able to apply it.

I just took Statistics online this past semester along with A&P 2, Sociology, and Microbiology while working full time. That was a horrible idea to take it online as it was a course I found myself constantly having to devote several hours to in order to complete the coursework. I had a rough time trying to understand certain concepts with Statistics. However, I still managed to put forth the time to make sure I grasped the information well enough to make it through the course successfully. I would say that I spent an average of 2-3 hours every day going over homework/studying for tests for Statistics on top of my other classes.

I would say it is definitely doable. I would just suggest making sure you utilize any resources offered at your school such as any tutoring labs there in order to understand the material before you have to take any exams. As for the English class.. If it is anything like my English 111 class, it was easy.

Best of luck to you! Just stay on top of your studies and you'll be fine.

I took A&P and stats the same semester and found the latter to be immeasurably more difficult. I got A's in both classes, but stats required me to have two tutors for five hours each week, plus loads of time on my own, plus going to my teacher's office hours. Happens to be, it was an honors course, and 75% of my class dropped out, and of the few who stayed, only me and one other person got A's, so it wasn't just me who struggled.

But that's just my experience. Others may find it to be different.

In my experience, stats was a lot less time consuming and I really did not have to study much for it. However, I am not too far out of high school and remember some concepts from high school. As for anatomy, I spent a lot of time studying and doing homework outside of class. I had an A in stats and a B in anatomy.

I'm strong in math, so I felt Stats was a breeze. Not sure if your program is going to use Excel or Minitab for your Stats program. If you know how to create graphs in Excel, then you'll be ahead of the game. Minitab is an *old* program and not very user-friendly. My Stats professor also did online tutorials on the STAT functions in our TI-85 calculators. I highly recommend Khan Academy's tutorials if there is a concept you don't understand in Stats. All in all, I felt it was fairly easy (compared to Algebra, Trig or Calculus).

I can't comment on your English class, because it is taught so differently from school to school. You'll probably be writing lots of papers if this is your first English course.

Ironic, some of the comments on here are saying that they've taken A&P w/ stats. That's exactly what I'm doing this semester starting next Tuesday. I'm so scared!

My school's math flow chart is math 95(elementary algebra)-->Math 96(intermediate algebra)-->Precalculus I

Here is an attachment of my school's math levels. I'm taking my stat class called "Psy 210". The requirement for this class is a "C" or better in math 95, so I'm assuming it's going to be easy since the highest math level I've attained is math 126.

For me A&P took up way more time. There's a lot more material. It's hard to compare the 2 because they are so different but stats wasn't as time consuming by far.

Depends on the professor and school. Ratemyprofessor.com is a good resource for finding answers based on who you'll potentially register to take the class with.
