How do you feel about paying for parking?

I wouldn't be too happy paying for parking unless I got really great spot, and even then its rude...

Well, just to add some perspective ...

In my former career I worked downtown, and paid $150.00/mo. for a lease. That amount was about the middle of the road as far as parking leases in my city.

When I start my GN position this summer I'll pay @$75.00/month for offsite parking (w/a shuttle) for day shift, and a space in the hospital garage for offshifts & weekends. I'm not even batting an eyelash.

It's all what you're used to, I guess ... I just wanted to point out that in urban areas, employees parking onsite at their company's facility at no cost is not typical.

The hospital I will start working at May 31 does not charge parking. There are 2 parking garages. ONe is mainly for patients and visitors, that one has an underground tunnel from the garage to the hospital (it is across a street from the hospital) so no rain, wind, etc.

The other, designed for staff, does not have an enclosed walkway to the hospital, but it is covered, and goes over a river, so its very pretty. The walk is a bit though, can be 10 mins from your car to the front of the hospital.

But its free!

I pay for parking. There are multiple lots and structures at the hospital, and you pay according to where you park, structure or surface lot, and whether you are full or part time. The people who work full-time and park in the structure pay approx $28.00/month. The people who work full-time and park in a surface lot pay $14.00/month. I'm part-time, and park in a lot, so it is $7.00/month.

I know what I pay is cheap compared to others, but I have never paid to park where I worked, so it kinda bugs me.

I do not have to pay for parking but we have to park offsite Monday- Friday and then take a shuttle. I would gladly pay a small fee to park in the garage.

So far I have never had to pay for parking at any facility I have worked. I do not think I would like it and I think I would find a way to build on this resentment, making my tough job even tougher. Why? If I pay for a service, then I expect good service, too many times staff is required to pay and still end up in unsafe spots, that is not good service. I did think one facility I visited once had a good idea, they closed 2 whole floors at 1300 so the evening shift would have adequate parking. A guard was there at 1415 to allow early shift people access to spots and he stayed there until 1600 and then the floors were opened to the general public. It made parking easier, safer, and a good value to the facility.

I can't even imagine working at a facility big enough to require parking garages, paid or otherwise.......and I complain about having to park 'out in the south 40' at my hospital! :chuckle

I do wish we had covered parking......I hate having to walk through the rain, since the instant water touches my hair it looks like I stuck my finger in a light socket. :uhoh3:

I am thinking about moving from one job to another and am weighing pros and cons. One thing that is on the " con " list for the new job is that fact that they charge for parking, in a garage that is across from the hospital. the cost is 30 .00 a month. you can park on the street sometimes for free but its risky and very often there are no spots. This place is building a new ICU and is crying for RNs . I would be a great candidate for them but this paying for parking really gets to me. Does your hospital make you pay to park and if so how do you feel about it? Even if they pay me the $$ in my rate that would make up for it ... something just bothers me about having to pay for a safe place to keep my vehicle while I work . I think Hospital employees should park for free.

I agree, I used to work at a dr's office that was connected to our Univ. Hosp...i made 10$/hr (temp job between transferring schools) and they made me pay 60/mo for parking...if you didnt pay ud have to park really far away in a bad neighborhood...also if you parked in the parking garage you were not designated to park in then they would deduct like 50$ from your paycheck...it sucked...lets just say i worked there for like a month..it was awful...

i pay 14/month to park at the nearby stadium, and take a bus to the hospital, which adds about 15 minutes onto my commute. if i wanted to add only 5 minutes to my commute, i'd pay 60/month (which is 700+ per year :eek: ) to park in a nearby garage. it's a bit irksome to have to pay to park, but i realize that i work at a huge facility.

That was my experience, too. We did get a rate if we car-pooled. In fact, for a time if there were enough people in your pool (5 or 6, I think), you could park free. No charge on week-ends, though, which was nice for people on week-ends only.

I had to pay parking at one hospital and you could never get a space in the car park you would spend half you life driving round and round, getting stressed before you even started your shift :banghead:
