How do you feel about going on field trips?

I LOATHE them and have to go on every.single.one :arghh: I have my own kids and NEVER once did I volunteer to be a chaperone. I feel like all the kids go nuts and act like fools and I just hate it.

I work at a small charter school and last year at the end of the year we went to the New England Aquarium. I love that place and it is $$ so when I found out I was a little excited to go on a field trip for once.

All the teachers and staff carry cell phones provided by the school b/c we don't have land lines. So we are about 10 minutes away from the aquarium and I get a call from a teacher on one of the other buses that one of the students is "throwing up and getting sick" on her bus. I'm like "what do you want me to do? I'm on a different bus"? She says "Can you meet us on our bus when we arrive"? So we arrive at the aquarium and they offload the kids from the bus where the girl got sick. I climb onto the bus and am smacked in the face with the most god-awful smell EVER. Think vomit mixed with putrid raw sewage. :yuck: I seriously almost puked myself. So the girl who had thrown up, also had several episodes of explosive diarrhea all over herself, the floor of the bus, the seat of the bus...I am surprised none made it onto the ceiling. So I spent the next TWO HOURS cleaning up this poor kid who had to stand in the middle of the bus aisle while I peeled her clothes off and tried to wipe her down. Bless the bus driver who was lovely and tried to help. Seriously worst day ever. Kid eventually made it into the aquarium and got to see some of it before we had to leave to head back to school.

So next week I am blessed with going apple picking with the first graders b/c we have two kids with diastat and two with epi-pens for bee stings...can't wait!

I would choose being water boarded over going on a field trip.

Oh my, poor kid and poor you! Not a fun time! As far as field trips, I've only gone on ones where I am Mom to my own kids - never in nurse capacity. And I enjoyed those. I am not required to go on any field trips or outings at my school. If there are meds, I package them and the teachers give them. Our IDDM student always has his mom go. Not sure what they would do if an incident like you had came up!

With the aggressive bee behavior fall brings. Good luck with that one.

Hopefully I never have to endure that bus ride from the netherworld. I used to get the day off, this year with a diabetic, I get to go on every one. Our field trips are whole school. Last one I had a kid hit his head and concussed himself. I think I just lost the field trip lottery and will now have to go with every one of them.

I absolutely DESPISE field trips.

I am blessed that I do not have to go for my school. At the summer camp I worked we had to send a nurse on every trip, but we would rotate that joy. So many crazy things happened on those trips. Girl bit on tongue by a bee, stepped on glass at a water park - seriously? The usual barfing, panic attacks, severe ear pain - took to emergent care. Peanut allergy couldn't eat anything offered at tubing excursion, luckily knew enough to ask about the special sauce in the wraps. The amount these parents pay for camp I would totally expect the same service.

Wow, that is eventful for sure!! Sorry you had to deal with that and of all places on a bus away from your office. Sounds like something that would happen to me or even with my own kids driving somewhere. I don't go on individual school trips but the entire school goes on one big trip to the beach at the end of the year that I have to attend. It's not too bad but can totally picture a teacher freaking out and calling me if a student did this!

I could see another nurse freaking out and screaming for help if a student did this!

I don't do field trips. I will try to send the sub nurse every time. We are bound by school policy to send a nurse on every blessed trip unless they are going to a school.

The only one i've had to go on is the overnight trip to Boston because i couldn't get any of my subs and it would have cost a mint to send the agency nurse.

I'll quote "bad teacher"...I'd rather get shot in the face. Like flare we are required to have one so I get a sub to go.

Wow, we do not go on field trips.
