How competitive is it to get into UTA, TWU, TCU, or Baylor (Texas) for BSN ?

Just wondering if there are any nursing students, grads or recent grads who are from north Texas area? :nurse:

How competitive are the schools in the area?

I am currently taking my pre-reqs at a jr college and want to know what i'm getting into here. :D

My counselor says UTA is a great program, but I just hope I get in at UTA. Any comments? I would really appreciate it, Thanks.

have that then you won't get accepted.. who knows. i still applied. any suggestions??

I'm still learning how to post comments..so if anyone is reading this..please respond lol.

thanks for whomever responded back to my comment about my gpa and my net scores.

i applied to baylor, twu dallas and willing to go to houston, tvcc, and sfa. thats it so far.

like i said i have a 3.418 gpa and an 83 composite nursing score. im just really praying that i

get in. i didn't stay at TWU which is where i started doing some of my prereqs so i dont get the

.4, but i just want to know what are my chances. i know baylor usually accepts around 3.5 so

i'm hoping maybe ill get that letter. but twu. i've heard it all.. with the 3.7 all they way to 4.0 and if you dont

I don't want to be hard on you but Katie Llewllyn, the TWU nursing advisor said herself that 3.7 was competitive, and if you had anything below that to re-take some classes. Also, TWU does not go by composite score; they look solely at your reading comprehension score. Goodluck

To the person who was put on the waiting list and got accepted I just wanted to know do you know how many people get put on the list. I was put on the list for spring 09 but didn't get in. They never gave me info on the list and wanted to know if you could share some light on this

yeah i knew that they looked only at the reading score. i went to twu for a year. just recently i spoke with jeff another advisor and he said that if you dont have the "competitive gpa" then try to aim for a high net score to try to weigh it out. i mean i dont know. its all so wishy washy. i mean for the girl to get a call back and had a 3.5 i cant really try to listen to all the stuff about 3.7 and 3.8. i guess it just depends on how many are applying it each semester. who knows. ill just pray on it. good luck to any and everyone who is reading this.

Im a senior nursing student at UTA. I think that its one of the best programs around. Its tough but they give you everying you need to succeed and will always help when its needed.

My best advice about UTA:

1. If you take 30+ hrs of your pre-reqs there they will consider accepting one of thier own before someone else

2. They weigh your science GPA more than your overall GPA. For example: I had like a 3.1 overall but a 3.75 for my science classes and I got accepted the first time I applied. So be sure to make A's in every science class you can. They matter more at UTA than all the others. UTA does not look at a NET score.

3. If you have good enough grades then you will be invited for an interview and a writing sample. So brush up on writing a quick good essay (into-3 paragraphs-conclusion), and be confident in your interview if you get invited. UTA only takes 100 students out of the 600-1000 that apply so you have to make an impression!

Good luck!!

thanks karaelaine .

i hope to get accepted into uta. i never took my sat's and just went to tcc for my pre-reqs. i didn't realize there were that many students that apply. i plan on keeping my gpa perfect. so basiclly do i have to keep my gpa in all classes 4.0? would that better my chances?

what do you mean by "if you have good enough grades then you will be invited for an interview and a writing sample?"

i can write an essay but what are they looking for? so you're a senior at uta, how exciting! a friend of mine is a pharm tech and she's studying to become a pharmacist.

what area do you plan on working in first?

bound4nursing,

How many pre-reqs do you have left or have you finished them all? Also keeping a 4.0 for all your classes would be best if you can do it cause other schools will probably look at your overall GPA and not just your science classes. UTA does look at your overall GPA but it is not weighed as much as your science GPA. If you have grades that rank in the top 250 or so applicants, then you will get invited for the interview and writing sample at UTA. Not everyone that applies gets invited.

Also I must mention the before you go into nursing school UTA requires that you take patho, pharm, and nursing concepts before entering the program. Just wanted to mention that cause not everyone knows about that! Most students take them the semester before going into nursing school while you are waiting on your letter telling you wether you get in or not.

As far as the writing sample goes you will be asked to come up with an essay on a provided topic at the time you write your sample. I think I was asked to write on on how I would deal with cheating in schools or something like that. I think what they are looking for is that you can come up with good ideas and that you are able to write an essay with complete thoughts and good grammer and what not. It is timed so practice!

I am very excited to be in my last semester! Its been a long hard journey but its very much worth it! Im thinking im going to go into the trauma-surgical ICU or the ER at the hospital I work at. Im not sure yet.

Princess, I think it was me you are talking about! I'm not sure, because I did call them and they couldn't tell me where I was at on the list or how long it was. The only thing she said was they start making calls when people decline their acceptance. That was almost 2 years ago though, so if you call maybe they'll be able to tell you now. I have heard that other schools do tell you where you are on the list if you call. Good luck!

"how many pre-reqs do you have left or have you finished them all?" karaelaine

it's my first year in any college and i am a freshman! ha! i am just getting started. but i am extremely excited about everything- school and life. i knew we had to take pharm, but no, not patho. thanks a bunch, i wasn't told that from my tcc counselor. sounds like you have done well for yourself. i hope to be in your shoes one day! i want to work in picu. my mother works at cook childrens and my daughter went there when she was having febrile seizures-she had 6 in the span of a 2 day period. all the nurses were nice and that is the kind of setting i hope to work in and help and care for children.

what was uta like, the instructors? there are tons of posts about how the nursing students feel that the instructors are hard on them.

Oh good so you have time! Well I would suggest transferring to UTA for you last 30 hours at least before applying to nursing school and youll have a better chance of getting in. Thats awesome you want to do pediatrics! More power to ya sister! I dont think I can do peds! Maybe one day but for now im sticking with adults. Anyway about UTA nursing school.... the instructors are hard but very good. And there is always help available. They have high standards but are willing to help you meet those standards. Some are better than others but overall I would say that the nursing students are happy ones at UTA and prepared for thier NCLEX and the real world after graduation.

Keep working hard and youll get there! I was in your shoes once I remember!

i would really love to attend uta but how flexible are their classes? i mean, can you take pre-req classes at night? like i do at tcc tues and thur nights 6-720 and 730-850pm?

i've read that the universities do prefer to choose students that attend uta prior to nursing (one's who take their pre-reqs at uta.) i didn't think that was the case. there's a girl in my math class who went to unt and said her math class was large and hard for her to ask questions. how would i easily get accepted into uta if i never took my sat's? i did however take the accuplacer. ha!

I have no idea about the SAT thing. I took mine but I dunno you will have to ask the counselor. I dont know when classes are you will have to check the schedule of classes on the school website www.uta.edu. You dont have to go to UTA for ALL of your pre-reqs just 30 hrs or more which is maybe your last 2 or 3 semesters before you apply to nursing school. Classes can be big but its never been an issue asking questions for me. Let me know if theres anything else you want to know!

Thanks, I am looking it up right now. ...I think I'll just stick to TCC as it better complements my work schedule. I don't mean to come off as bothersome but have the majority of your nursing classmates came from a transfer like TCC or did they attend UTA as well prior to nursing?
