How come t here are no Males RNs on a peds floor?

Published

Don't really know why I'm thinking about this, but how come I've never seen any male nurses on a Pediatrics floor? Is it liability issue? Because men don't generally like kids? Do you know of any? I could honestly see why a nurse manager on a pediatrics floor would find a reason not to hire a male nurse (just because chilld molester's are mostly male).

personally, i know i would never leave my young child alone with a male nurse. i also would never hire a male babysitter. how about you guys? it's a potential risk i'm not willing to take. also, i don't think there's much validity to the arguement that "well, women can be molesters too!" Well, the truth is, that's so damn rare that it's not even worth mentioning. also, most cases like that involve women of legal age having sex with teenage boys - not toddlers.

fwiw, many of the 7 year olds my husband coaches get so excited they have accidents and often the coaches end up being the ones to get the kids washed up and changed because they (the kids) don't want their siblings, parents or friends to find out. he keeps baby wipes, extra undies in varying sizes, and extra jeans and uniform pants in a duffle bag in the back of his jeep. so do the other coaches. as the boys outgrow their things, they are donated to be used as spares, which are worn home, washed and quietly returned with the kids being none the wiser. the wet things are quietly returned as well. i guess i'm not quite understanding how this is a whole lot different in its essence.:thnkg:

she's talking about a nurse since nurses stay with the patients like she said for 12 hours. not that a 'nurse' is not to be trusted like a doctor or couch, because a dr or couch only have limited time with them while a nurse stays or has 12 hour patient care. IMO that's what I understood, I could be wrong, but going back to the topic, the three times me son has been hospitalized I have not seen a male nurse in the peds floor. It wouldn't bother me to have a male nurse assigned to my son-like someone else said, it depends on the vibe I got from either the female or male nurse. But then again-who would leave their kid alone at a hospital? I wouldn't, and if for some reason, my husband would stay, or my mother, father, sister, there is always someone we can ask to stay with our kids if we are unable to.

I saw three male nurses on the floor I had my Ped's clinical on. I agree that I wouldn't leave my child alone in the hospital. Even if DH or I had to work we have family or friends who would stay.

Well not all of us are fortunate enough to have family and friends close by and some of us have other children and a spouse that needs to work and help with them. So when one of my sons was in the hospital for a few days, I did have to leave a few times to pick up other kids from school and get them home or to shower and go back. I wasn't able to stay for 24 hours a day every day. I stayed for about 21 every day instead.

For the vast majority of child victimizers in State prison, the victim was someone they knew before the crime. 1/3 had committed their crime against their own child, about 1/2 had a relationship with the victim as a friend, acquaintance, or relative other than offspring, about 1 in 7 reported the victim to have been a stranger to them.

Your child is more likely to be molested by a relative or family friend.

i would leave my child with a male coach and a male Dr. I just think there's a big difference when you're leaving your child with a male stranger, alone, at night, for 12 hours. Don't get me wrong, I love men - lord knows i do, lol, but I think it opens up a potential risk..... it's just *my* opinion - i just feel uneasy about leaving my child with a male nurse that I don't know. You all brought up the fact that you personally KNOW male nurses that would be fantastic with your children. There's a big difference between personally knowing the nurse. Would you feel the same way if you did NOT know the nurse? That's more of what I'm getting at.

i'm impressed that your guys' hospital has male RNs on the peds floor. we have them in the peds ICU, but absolutely no men on the general peds floor.

This post is making me sooooo mad! My husband is a nurse, my 2 best friends husbands are RN's and they are all damn good Nurses too. Compassionate, professional and skilled! This is the most stereotypical, judgmental posting I have read yet! Let me tell you something, if your child was THAT sick that he/she has to be admitted to the hospital, then you should be so lucky to have RN's like these men looking after your child's health!

Great job putting the nursing profession back 50 years!

I agree with Blackheartednurse. Do you really think male nurses are likely to be peadophiles and child molestors?

I work in a children's hospital. Over the years, we have had many male RNs in ALL areas - NICN, PICU, and general Peds floor. So, the post grabbed my attention. As I read, I became more and more appalled. The subject matter demeaned and insulted some of the finest nurses I know!

This attitude is just so, so, I don't know how to express myself. I work with several men in our PICU and they are awesome nurses, as are the floor RNs. To say any of these men are less trustworthy for sexual abuse is beyond belief. Any of the male nurses could care for my children (when they were little) or my granddaughter. There are female nurses I wouldn't want to care for them or her because they aren't "up to snuff" with their patient care.

We have a couple of frequent female flyers who are not allowed to have a male nurse, not because of the behavior or trustworthiness of the nurse, but because the female patient was inappropriate with males (RN or anyone else).

Others have already cited statistics that are accurate with regard to molestation, so I won't go there.

Well, I'm just flabbergasted at this whole line of thinking regarding male nurses and pediatrics. Flabbergasted!!!

I've seen quite a few male nurses both on the pedi floor and in pediatrician offices. Young boys are often more comfortable talking to a guy than they are to a woman. The op was a slap in the face to every male nurse out there.

I really have to wonder what could have caused this attitude to begin with.

I am quite offended by this thread , I am a PROFESSIONAL , I am by chance male and I have nursedalmost exclusively in pediatrics ,:- psychiatry , general peds , PICU and NICU .

Indulge me a moment whilst I create another scenario When my teenage son is admitted to hospital to the care of a young female nurse , who appears attracted to him , should I be concerned that she is going to molest him , NO I know that she like my fellow male RN's are professionals .

This thread is a greater reflection of the OP than any male nurse !!!

I'm sorry to have to say this ( JOMO I think from previous threads you have participated in your are from another country , so we make allowances for your being culturally challenged ), but on this occassion you have gone too far !!

Jomo are you really 94? According to your profile you were born in1915? I can't imagine you are a nurse or a practicing one if that is correct. Of course it could explain your way of thinking.
