How to avoid the 'waitlist' in a nursing program?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I'm taking up nursing prerequisites at community college, a lot of people say that the nursing program has a waiting list, in what way can I avoid that? How can I be accepted into the program as soon as possible? Thanks. :)

GPA or do an emergency tracheostomy on the head of the nursing department in your school when she chokes and no one else can save her and you just happen to have a straw and a pen knife. She is so grateful for your life-saving medical expertise, she bypasses all conventional means of applying and you are granted a seat in the program. LOL - GPA and TEAS

I avoided it with a high GPA, there are only about 33 schools that offer the associate's degree for an RN without a wait list. Personally, I took a semester of classes got a high GPA and got into clinicals and now I will be done with my bachelor's a semester early. Just stay on top of things and contact those who are in charge of clinical admission. That's what I did and it worked for me.

thanks a lot! :)

Oh also make sure you take the classes to get on the wait list ASAP! Like at my school you had to be an STNA and take the freshman experience class to even qualify for the program.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Oncology, Epic CT.

Unfortunately, some wait lists are unavoidable. For instance, here in Arizona at the community colleges, they pick people like a lottery out of a certain pool with a certain number of slots to be filled. The pool consists of people with certain time tags of when they applied. They're just starting to get to people who applied in late 2010-early 2011. The ADN-BSN programs have no wait lists, but they are highly competitive. All based on test scores (TEAS/HESI) and GPA. I had a good GPA, but, there have been people out there that have been able to work on better GPAS and I had two jobs...didn't want to wait...so I chose the private school path. :)

Good luck!

npratt10, why do you say only 33? There are many more than that.

I thought I read that statistic on the Johnson&johnson website. I'm only talking state funded community colleges. I live in Northwest Ohio and I know all of the ones within a 2 hour radius of me have at least a 1 year wait list.

STNA?

STNA is what they call a nurse's aide in Ohio aka CNA.

Specializes in hospice, HH, LTC, ER,OR.

Make all A's and the highest score you can on your nursing placement test.

Specializes in Hope to be in peds, NICU, or L&D..

At my local community college our wait list "expires" at the start of each semester. In other words, if I hadn't made it OFF the wait list this term it would drop me and everyone else and we would have to apply for the fall. We have 47 seats in the program and they take another 30ish for the wait list( out of over 500 applicants). I was number 7(or 6?) on the wait list and I made it in the Friday after the initial emails were sent out informing students of their status. I wouldn't stress out about it. Just maintain a high GPS and work the TEAs or HESI a2!! GL,!
