Houston Residencies Summer 2019!!

Published

Can you believe applications have started opening up? Anyway, just an early start for everyone to discuss.

I'm planning on applying to Harris Health, Memorial Hermann, Methodist, & TCH, and I will be applying to multiple locations for each. I'm trying to decide if I should branch out and apply at some places out of state or not since I want a very demanding specialty, but I'm not necessarily ready to uproot my family just for my residency. I'm open to suggestions or thoughts from others who have been through this part of the experience already.

I want to start buying scrubs too! At HCA Tomball they currently wear pink scrubs on the women’s floor but are rumored that everyone will change to royal blue and that the scrubs have to come from the hospital because they will have their logo on it ??‍♀️

Interesting, I did my Pedi and OB rotation at Women’s and everyone wore royal blue. I hope that’s not the case, I’ve been itching to get a pair of figs- and I’m pretty sure you can get the logo embroidered on any pair of scrubs. I wonder if this is something that the recruiters would know ?

Girl, I am at a different hospital system and I live in my figs! Even when I'm not at work, so comfy my non-medically inclined husband bought several pairs instead of sweats!

She’s correct, the scrubs will have to be ordered from the hospital. They aren’t letting people buy their own and have them embroidered anymore! But they’ll still be royal blue.

You’re kidding that’s so disappointing! I was really looking forward to finally being able to buy scrubs that didn’t make me look like a little boy in a baggy T-shirt and sweatpants ?

Is that just for women’s or all HCA hospitals?

In theory, we could still buy figs bottoms and pair them with the embroidered top.

I’m curious how they’ll tell the difference. I’m not someone who would deliberately challenge it, but I’m sire they are people that would

I *think* its all HCA hospitals but I only know for sure about womans. I'm don't remember for sure, but I'm pretty sure I remember them saying the bottoms were going to be embroidered too. I don't remember 100% though. You may be better off just waiting before you buy anything. I know one of the brands to choose from is cherokee, I don't remember the other.

That’s such a bummer lol. Did you get that info from one of the recruiters?

When I had my peer interview at Tomball the nurses told me everyone would be changing to royal blue “in case you were needed at a different location.” They also said both top and bottoms would be embroidered. I’m super bummed, I was looking forward to picking our my own scrubs! I’m also used to navy blue bring the universal RN color but I’m from Arizona so maybe it’s different here. ??‍♀️

Generally from what I observed through my clinical rotations, each hospital system had a specific color RN’s wore. Some over lapped (Ex. HCA and TCH both wore royal blue) and then others were different from each other (ex. St. Luke’s wears teal and UTMB wears black). I’m bummed too, I was super excited to try out figs!

So update on the whole scrub thing: I talked to Erika, one of the HCA recruiters today and she confirmed that HCA is transitioning to ordering our scrubs through them. However, she said during our training we can wear whatever scrub color we have and once we’re getting ready to transition onto the hospitals pay roll we’ll sit down with HR and order our scrubs through them. Personally I think I’m probably go ahead and purchase 1 or 2 pairs of royal blue scrubs so I don’t totally stick out durIng training ?
