I am a new graduate who did my clinicals on many different units in several different hospitals around Austin. I can’t speak personally on these barriers, but I will say I did meet many 50+ nurses during my practice, even some who began nursing as a second career just a few years ago. Austin is a very transient area and there are always new hires of all ages coming in, so it’s not normally the case where older nurses are only there because they have already been with the hospital for 10+ years. I’d say your experience makes you extremely marketable with so many young people wanting to live and work in Austin. On another note, I would recommend looking into the Seton health network, I feel they have the best atmosphere and work environment of all of the hospital systems I’ve been at. Best of luck!
