Houston Residencies Summer 2019!!

Published

Can you believe applications have started opening up? Anyway, just an early start for everyone to discuss.

I'm planning on applying to Harris Health, Memorial Hermann, Methodist, & TCH, and I will be applying to multiple locations for each. I'm trying to decide if I should branch out and apply at some places out of state or not since I want a very demanding specialty, but I'm not necessarily ready to uproot my family just for my residency. I'm open to suggestions or thoughts from others who have been through this part of the experience already.

Hello!

to me it was one of the most comfortable interviews I’ve had. They asked me basic question about myself, why I wanted to become a nurse, what made me interested in the floor I was applying too, and lastly why do I apply to Memorial Hermann. Then towards the end they asked me 3 nclex style questions and asked why should they choose me versus other candidates. I would just say brush up on information about the hospital, bring a portfolio, know why you choose the floor your applying too and take your time when answering the nclex questions. Sending you good luck & positivity!!

Thank you so much! When you say NCLEX type questions, are they more about scenarios/prioritization? Or about knowing things like medications and skills?

They asked me 3 prioritization questions. It won’t be anything that could throw you off. One question I remember involved 4 patients: “one who needs a pain med, one who needs a blood transfusion, one who needs to go to the bathroom who is also fall risk, and last was a patient who was with the doctor and wanted to review labs with you present. who would you see first”. But just keep in mind of things you can delegate!

Okay cool! Thank you so much ?

I know this topic was for Summer Cohorts. I have an interview with MH NE for their fall cohort and was wondering if anyone can give pointers for their interview process? What kind of questions did they ask?

Hey guys if there's anyone starting at LBJ Harris health in July message me! I'd love to meet new people.

Hey guys! So sorry if this is a dumb question, but how long in advance should you take your NCLEX before you start your residency program? I am signed up to take the NCLEX a month in advance, but I was reading the NCLEX website and it says it could take up to 6 weeks to get "official" results. My recruiter mentioned I need the results a few days before I start. Should I try to move my NCLEX date? I know I can get the "unofficial" results a few days after, I'm just not sure if the recruiter meant the "official" results or if the unofficial is fine.

As long as you pass, the board of nursing website should have you as an official RN with a license number within 2-5 days depending on what day of the week you took and passed your exam. I took it on a Thursday and found out I passed on a Saturday and my name was on the website by Tuesday.

i took the nclex on a thursday and had my official license on tuesday

Hey so if you passed your name should be posted on the BON 48 hours after you test. Your license number will be available 48 hours after your license is posted. Your name on the BON is an ‘official result’. You’ll also get a letter from the BON congratulating you on passing, telling you your license number etc.

Anyone who started at an hca hospitals know what their PTO policies are?
