Houston Nurse Residency Summer 2021 Applicants

Published

I wanted to start a new thread for those of us applying to Houston new grad nurse residency programs to ask questions and share information.

I am brand new to this site so I hope I'm doing this correctly... Good luck everyone!

I wouldn’t accept a position I don’t want personally especially not with HCA’s contract. You have really amazing experience it sounds like- better than me for sure. Maybe someone could look over your resume (career services, a nurse you know, etc.) to see if there is a way you could stand out more? Maybe if you put TMC first then you could put some other locations first in the next go around? Memorial Hermann and Methodist recruit again starting in May, so it’s really not that far away. If you’re heart is in women’s health then I wouldn’t settle. I know it’s hard when you want a job though!

ugh I knowwwww I hate settling. I’ve had my career counselor and my preceptor look at my resume and they said it looks great so IDK! The HCA location is only 15 minutes from my house though, so that’s kind of a plus. They also said that I wouldn’t receive a contract with the full offer until a month before my start date, which is July 19. So maybe I could accept for the time being and hope TCH reaches out?

If you do that, have your lawyer look over stuff.  I was told you only have 48 hours to sign the contract from date of hire with HCA.  Just be careful

Would y’all accept an offer in a position you don’t like? I am so passionate about women’s services, but the only offer I’ve received is in a PCU unit at HCA. every other hospital has literally ghosted me, I’ve received no rejection letters but no communication either. my application status’s all sat under review. I’ve emailed and bugged every hospital; the only responses I’ve gotten is “they are still in the process.” After receiving a 3.7 and working in pediatric home health for 4 years, I feel as if my college experience and what I’ve arrived for will go to waste if I accept a position in the PCU. But I feel like I have no other option. WhT would y’all do? waiting until the next cohort and reapplying is my least favorite option right now

I think this also depends on your financial situation, if you have the ability to wait a few months for the next round of residency applications then I would wait for something you'd like more. I'm thinking I will be in this same position very soon

Yes!  Financial situation is a huge thing.  Only you know if you can handle to wait or not.

Yes, it will probably be worth the wait

I just started the StaRN program and they do send you the offer to sign via DocuSign ~month before. You can accept now but it’s verbal, take it back if you want to. You can recant your offer until the day you’re supposed to start. You may piss someone off but you’re not legally legally bound til you physically show up day 1. I went through some crap with them but I got my dream job so I’m staying. I wouldn’t settle if you have any doubt. 2yrs is a long time esp when you’re dreading going to work. I went through the exact same thing until literally last Thursday when I was moved and started today.

OMG tell me about their strategy I didn’t know this unless you’re just talking about the 2 year commitment

If you look a few pages earlier, we talked about them scamming me out of multiple interviews with units they said I would be applying for, only to try and coax me into going into medical surgical

OMG okay this is somewhat good news! maybe I’ll find a better offer along the way, especially since my start date is so late! can I ask what unit/location you worked before your transfer? ?

It was more so location that sucked, at HCA West when I live way up north. I got L&D there but when the found out my distance I was switched to a medsurg bc of on-call purposes and I was gonna leave it all together but then was given northwest L&D
