Houston Nurse Residency Summer 2021 Applicants

Published

I wanted to start a new thread for those of us applying to Houston new grad nurse residency programs to ask questions and share information.

I am brand new to this site so I hope I'm doing this correctly... Good luck everyone!

I called and they said we should hear back by the end of the week or next week about a 2nd match day if they units need that, but they are having all the interviews this week, so depends on how they do

Thank you so much !

hey y’all! sorry to be butting in LOL.. I don’t graduate until December but I’m trying to get myself prepared now, if y’all don’t mind me asking a couple of questions.

1) were y’all ever asked why you did virtual clinical rather than actual clinical? apparently they’re asking that question in interviews in my city..

2) to those who moved forward in the application process.. what were your stats? GPA? involvement? related work history? etc.

thank you so much! ?

Whenever they ask me questions about "Tell me about the time you made a mistake/had a difficult patient/had to ask for help" related to nursing, I always ask them if it is OK to talk about my simulations since I didn't have much clinical experience and explain why I didn't have that experience. (We have one clinical rotation per semester but on our fourth aka last semester that is just a full clinicals semester and because of COVID I didn't have that last semester of clinicals)

I got into application/interview for both HCA and Memorial Herman and I got a job offer for HCA. I had a 3.1 GPA. I remember they asked me for my GPA for MH for their initial written application and during my interview with HCA for their medical center location. I have no previous healthcare related work experience or volunteer experience. I did join nursing associations. Since I am interested in Neuro ICU I joined critical care association and the neuroscience association. I also joined ENA because it was free and I also joined NSA when I was in school. Now I'm certified in ALS (along with BLS) and I'm pretty sure I'm now certified in NIH Stroke Scale. I say that you join organizations (if you are financially able to) related to the position you are applying to! And if you can get certified in things related to the position you're applying to (and you've already passed the NCLEX since I think you have to be licensed in order to be certified but don't quote me on this) to do it if you can.

yeah I agree with her! I didn’t sign up for any organizations and I regret it. haven’t gotten an interview and I’m graduating Cum Laude! I only have experience in Home Health, so I say get some experience as a PCT in the hospital you want to work at!
