Hospitals are laying off nurses and merging job duties/responsibilities to improve their bottom line. What do you think about these moves? Is this happening in your area? Do you think it will improve "customer" satisfaction?

(Sorry, OP. What can I say....I was forced to take this darn writing course for the RN-BSN degree. I didn't want to but they made me.)

I already knew that corporations don't have heart, a soul or compassion. (oh, wait, they were talking about the robots.....)

Our corporate citizens don't care about the health of the American people...those citizens care about the capitalist laws and regulations that affect their ability to make profit.
Our legislators pass laws to make the few corporate citizens happy because those citizens give them $$.
As long as capitalism is the foundation of our health system, rather than prevention, treatment, and outcomes, American's will continue to have the worst outcomes and most expensive system on the planet.
Corporate health care groups will continue to lay off nurses as a way to insure their profits...even though people are hospitalized for NURSING care. They will continue to ignore the plethora of studies that directly link outcomes to nursing hours at bedside and minimize access to the very thing patients need because of the expense.
They will focus, instead, on whether or not the patients and families believe that their hospital stay was enough like a 5 star hotel to make them happy.

I never have liked or entirely agreed with the paradigm of a patient being a "customer" and therefore "the customer is always right". This concept might work well in other areas such as selling shoes, cars, groceries, etc. but IMHO it just doesn't fit health care or hospital care very well.

I think hospitals can use robots to take care of garbage and clean the building instead of taking good care of patients..they are robots! not nurses..

The concept "the customer is always right" has not worked well in any area. One of the greatest business concept mistakes ever crafted.

And that's worked soooo well.But shouldn't having a robotized nurse fix lots? ---Teach it/program It to get hard IV sticks, nasty NG's, and Foleys past a 78-year-old-prostate, all on the first try; while not causing any mess, limiting temporarily said patient's obsession with his TV remote, cell phone, sandwich. Keeps scores up! ---Program with the only responses needed: "Yes, m'am", and "thank you". Nice & simple! ---Stock it like a coke machine with Demerol, Dilaudid, Benadryl, and Phenergan, and lots of NS flushes. That way, the "customer" can have their cocktail within literally seconds of requesting it. Scores just went wayyyyy up!Sounds great!
