Hospials to work at in Bradenton area

i will be moving to bradenton (from mi) next june, after graduation. i have been trying to find out some information about which hospitals in the area are good to work for. i am willing to go in surronding areas too so anything in about an hours drive will work. i would love some feedback from employees (current & previous) of the hospitals if there are any out there!! thanks!!!

Check "Manatee Memorial". I hear they are good to work for. Hopefully someone will come along and answer. These kinds of specific questions take a while.

i did a lot of my clinicals at the va in miami and i believe there is a va in tampa, and i think it is going to become a magnet va hospital, was great place and everyone loved working there, great benefits and largest hospital system to work for so transferring anywhere is a breeze...i am jealous the west coast is so much nicer than the east in my opinion, i live in ft. lauderdale the sand is so soft on the west coast beaches, enjoy!!! don't get me wrong i love south floriday too!!

Actually I live in Bradenton and work at Sarasota Memorial Hospital which is about 20 minutes away. I looked at the hospitals in Bradenton (mainly Blake and Manatee Memorial), and both have higher nurse:patient quotas than SMH. Once I finish nursing school, I will definitely stay with SMH.

I'll second this suggestion. I'm a traveler who gets back to FL about once a year. I'm currently on contract at Sarasota Memorial for the second time - I enjoyed it here enough that I came back - and am thinking of extending.

I work in a hospital in the Tampa area.....takes about 45 minutes to get to from Bradenton. I love it here. I work critical care. I dont know what area of nursing you are looking to work in. I'd be happy to tell you what hospital and tell you who to contact if interested however I'd prefer to do it via a PM because I'd rather not disclose my employer publically (its a small world ya know :)

I just moved here and don't have any great recommendations- I live about an hour from you:)- but I would suggest signing on with an agency, so you can "visit" a few places, make better $$ and see what you like. That way, you are not locked into anything and can decide for yourself, from a working point of view. Good luck and welcome!:welcome:

Yeah, I'm still there...as with every place there are pluses and minuses, right? I think that as long as I stay down here in FLA, I will stay there.

The pay isn't too bad. I'm not a nurse yet so I'm not privy to how much people actually work, but I believe base for a new nurse is about $20 and then you add in the differentials.

One new development is that they are preparing to build a new tower building which is supposed to be pretty impressive...my biggest hope is that they will start to just have private rooms or at least larger semiprivate ones (they are like closets now).

There are two things to consider. First SMH is a community hospital so alot of their census is charity care. They are more apt (and do) call off RN's/LPN's when census drops. Manatee is also a community hospital. Blake is a private hosp.

If you go north over the Bridge, there are more hospitals which pay more. You have to consider the travel, gas (it is high here) and tolls for the bridge.

South, you have Venice hospital, but again their census dictates their staffing. The hospital has been redone, has a good management and staff.

Remember SMH last year went through a nasty union ordeal, and alot of their nursing is done sitting in front of a PC screen.

Alot of the neat opportunities in this area are in the private day surgery, OP dialysis and physician group practices. In this arena you get real hands on experience without the high overhead of a hospital infrastructure.

Also you have a vibrant LTC/ALF opportunity (gods waiting room remember) that tends to pay less but you trade off the travel and stress.

Also part of Bradenton is Lakewood Ranch which has their own Lakewood Ranch hospital which is a new facility, in a nice part of town. But getting there can be a pain having to drive across University Pkwy and the

plazas.

Hope all this helps, work for the pay but leave for the beaches! Buy a Jet Ski and your whole priorty system changes. :smokin:

I won't deny that when the census is low during the summer, there is a greater chance of being either floated or flexed...but that is for many of the hospitals in Florida unfortunately because of the snowbird situation. One of the positives that you didn't mention is that 6 patients is usually the maximum number that a nurse will have to care for. At Blake, nurses can have as many as 10/11 patients...to me, a private hospital means that the purse strings are going to be even tighter.

As for union...I'm not really sure what you are talking about, because as far as I know there is no union for nurses. have you worked at smh?
