Holy Abscess! Not for the faint of heart

This is quite a large abscess, kind of gross too :)

My son saw this and asked if it was real? I said it looks real to me. What do you think?

Have any of you nurses seen an abscess this bad? Worse?

Oh my!!! That is sick....but I had MRSA and literally had an abscess the size of a football in my right leg and six lovely penrose drains! I feel this person's pain because it was the WORST feeling in the world. It literally felt like someone took a fireplace poke, swirled it around in the fire to get it nice and hot and stuck it in my leg. I had it drained twice prior to hospitalization for the abscess blowing up to the size of a football within three days!!!! I always wondered how much pus they drained....but I was so drugged up that I never asked.

Anybody want a tall glass of milk ? :D

Cool! Nothin' much bothers me...well, except a colostomy.

lol... that is so funny 'cause a couple of weeks ago my cousin and I were

looking at this stuff on youtube. If you search it there are all kinds of gross absesses. I love to pop pimples on people (I know... kind of gross!!) but that's how we came across the videos we saw!!

Yep. Have seen this with MRSA abscesses. Smells kinda strong too usually. Did an I&D like this on a buttocks abscess a couple of yrs ago.

I'm surprised he didn't lose the leg. Can't wait to show that one.

I have seen something similar. Many years ago a patient called me into the room stating something was wrong. I lifted back the sheets and it looked like a colostomy bag had come off. Trouble was she didnt have a colostomy.

She had fecal material from waist to thigh( swear I saw some carrots in there). She had a old drain site that I guess had become a fistula. I was squeezing that old drain site for at least 10 minutes getting all the pus out.

I cleaned her up and called the night intern to see her. I must have cleaned her up too well, he didnt believe me :uhoh3:

That lady did not get an xray until 2 days later. Ahh the 1980's gotta love them, not!

I thought as well how much better he must've felt after getting all that crap out of there. Looks real to me as well.

When I worked in the community health center, I&Ding abscesses was one of my favorite things to do. I love popping zits as well, but the main reason I like it is that it's one of the few things (like removing an ingrown toenail, another favorite) where people get relief almost instantaneously. Not, "here's your antibiotics, call us if you're not feeling better in 48 hours".

I got to watch an I&D in clinicals and it was really cool. You just have to make sure you're not standing right in the way of the first cut otherwise you could end up with this all over you!

It does have quite the smell though. That's what got to me!

My poor husband, who is very squeamish, walked into the room when this was playing. He had to leave until it was over.

My son likes the gross stuff, too. He sends me YouTube clips of zits being popped. Some of them are really disgusting.
