Hi everyone! I am 32 years old, married six years next month & mother to a beautiful three year old boy and two three year old Boston Terriers! I am heading back to school to fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming an RN. My mother has been an RN for 35 years, most of it in the ER. She is my inspiration! Other than my mom, I guess I have wanted to be a nurse because of all the experiences I have had in the hospital. I was diagnosed w/Crohn's Disease when I was 14 - this illness has taken me to hell and back. I have had five bowel resections and numerous other surgeries for related complications. I have had the pleasure of knowing some awesome nurses over the years & my ultimate goal is to work with teens with GI problems, hopefully inflammatory bowel disease. Since I have spent more than half of my life living with Crohn's, I feel this is where I can really give back. I was hoping to head back to school full time this month, but because we may be relocating because of my husband's job, I will only be taking one class. Either way, I will be heading back full time in January! I really enjoy this board - you all are really wonderful!!!!:balloons:

Hi, Kyle'smom,

Welcome, first of all get settled with your possible move. Then go for your dream! I'm 35, married, 2.2 children. (4, 11, 12, 17). Just finished all my preq. for LPN, waiting on exceptance letter, next week. If I get in, I will be in class full time starting in Oct., if finances hold out I will go straight into bridge program. It's been tough, but if you want it bad enough you can do it! Everyone tells me my kids will forgive me for ignoring them. LOL

Good Luck.;)

Hi Kyle's Mom,

I'm not a student, but read your post and wanted to wish you the best. My sister (who is now 40), was dx with Crohn's disease at age 12. She has had an ileostomy since then. I wish she could have had a nurse like it sounds like you WILL be, helping to take care of her when she was an adolescent. It might have made a big difference in the development of her personality. She's a sweetheart, don't get me wrong. But overall, her attitude has been one of low self esteem, a sense of entitlement through life, as well as "I can't do that" when it comes to things like maximizing her potential in life. I don't believe that the disease in itself caused all that, but the dynamics within the family that developed as a result of her illness.

Because of your experiences, you will have insights that others may not necessarily have had. I think it is wonderful that you have decided to work in an area in which your wisdom and caring may touch lives in such profound ways. Good luck to you and God bless you.
