The "nursebot" is actually reffered to as "Florence".

Quote from link that was posted,
"If a hospitalized patient complains about sudden pain, the doctor might be able to check from home or from out of town."
You're right, they will replace us for many tasks. Robots can/could pass trays, meds, answer call lights, bring supplies, carry specimens, blankets, etc.
I can see it now, M/S with one RN to 10 or more patients/4 nurses total, 4 robots, and --6 CNA's--(I know I'm dreaming).
What irritates me is the fact that they are testing and planning to use it for Dr's. Why can't they see, it is the nurse who needs the robot? We could save miles on our feet by answering the call lights and sending robots to give a med, etc. Or would it be so great?
The patients in the article said they liked thier care with the robot and stated increased satisfaction when they had a robot.
Somehow, I don't think the patients would feel the same way if it was the nurse at the helm instead of the Dr. They'd feel they didn't receive good care.
Look at all the hours we'd loose spending time to get to know our patients. It's and will be so automated.
There is a hospital in my area that has a robot to deliver trays to the units amoung other things. The patients love the high tecnology.
Technology here now: I have a patient on an insulin pump that has a glucometer that hooks up and automatically gives the dose depending on the carb intake that the patient inputs, and the BS level. I no longer need to do the infusion, it's automatic.
They predict that there will not be enough nurses in the future, but now/near future might be the worst of our shortage, b/c when they replace us with robots they won't need so many of us.
Couple robots with loosening laws governing UAP's and bingo! you've got care! UGH!
Atleast there are some areas where they will never be able to replace nurses. ICU, L/D, Post Op, ER, and the one nurse that will be running the entire unit for the other areas.

Nurses have asked for this kind of replacement. If I were a patient I just might prefer the robot, and my doctor over the nurses. Nurses have become robots by not furthering their education and becoming task oriented (following doctors orders). Nurses have little respect for each other, and very little self respect. The nursing profession has done nothing for recognition of what nursing is truly about, but it has been talked about for years. When I take my patient to floor post-op, and find the nurses on the floor having a good time in the lounge, I would love to have the doctor via robot present. I could rest easy knowing someone is carining for the patient. Hospitals are not safe, because of nursing (lack of education & caring).
I'm looking for a way out of nursing. I've been a RN for 12+ years, and I'm very sad about the observations and feelings surrounding my profession. I wish I had the calling to go forth and change things, but I just don't.

oh yeah i can see it now. a pt in room 5 coding say it was your child, wait thats the robots pt, its not responding oh did you try control, alt, delete. or the connection has been lost no service an error report is being generated haha. how many times a shift do you see problems with computers that we chart with. much less imagine full care being provided by a robot. so if you want to reley on some metal and silicone for your care thats fine. no replacement for competent humans if you ask me.

how is a higher degree going to make you not a robot. i dont know about everyone else here but CA make us take ceu, cont EDUCATION units to renew a license.
becoming task oriented (following doctors orders).
that is the biggest problem, we have all these nurses trying to be doctors, as far as i know its beyond my scope of practice to give even a tylenol with out a script. i guess maybe where you practice nurses are also the MD, ps they are not paying me to have the responsibility of a MD.
Hospitals are not safe, because of nursing (lack of education & caring).
how is a MSN going to help you pass meds and wipe a$$? O.R. huh, well i have sympathy for my bros and sisters on the floor that have 15 pts keeping up with meds, adls, etc. i suppose you think they should not have a break or lunch time? as for safety i dont see what your getting at.
i feel more people would care about becoming a nurse if we had higher wages and better working conditions.
this is going to be great "check on a pt from out of town", calling up a MD and saying i need you to go to your robot i dont care if your at the beach in cancun.

I don't even know what to say to this!!! I do know that I would be TICKED OFF in the EXTREME if someone sent that thing into my room while I was in the hospital.
There are so many things wrong with this idea, I wouldn't even know where to start........Of course , it will probably catch on...being in the hospital will be similar to trying to get a PERSON on the telephone when you call a business about a billing error!

As far as the "nurse" robot in that second article, I just do NOT see this catching on with the elderly. My grandmother couldn't dial a rotary phone, and she freaked out when the answering maching picked up before she did.

So if one doesn't have the calling to try and change things for the better, the answer is to criticize and insult the hard working nurses who try and keep pluggin' in impossible conditions??
Many of us have tried to effect change, and will continue to try.
Sorry but this post contains rather strange logic to me. The least we can do is support one another IMHO.
This poster must work in an unusual place... when I bring nurses out of ICU those floor nurses are running their tails off...we don't even HAVE 'lounges' because we generally take no breaks...who has time or staff to safely do so??? Not me on most shifts....
I guess I'm getting tired of statements claiming "It's the nurses' fault' for the ills of today's medical system today.

I can't take thos seriously, I mean the doc bot thing is just a toy> it wouldent realisticly be any more useful then a telephone. It would seem to me that it would be just as time consumeing to pilot they robot threw the hospital as to get up off your big ass and walk into to patients room.

And so the doctor gets to bill he patient for a hospital visit each time the robot comes to the room? I guess it's better than being billed for the doc poking his head into the room, charting that the patient was asleep, and billing for it.
At least with the robot, the interaction would be documented if the visits are recorded. That could work to the advantage of the patient as well as the doctor (not to mention the attorneys).
