The nursing profession has done nothing for recognition of what nursing is truly about, but it has been talked about for years. When I take my patient to floor post-op, and find the nurses on the floor having a good time in the lounge, I would love to have the doctor via robot present. I could rest easy knowing someone is carining for the patient. Hospitals are not safe, because of nursing (lack of education & caring).
I'm looking for a way out of nursing. I've been a RN for 12+ years, and I'm very sad about the observations and feelings surrounding my profession. I wish I had the calling to go forth and change things, but I just don't.
and Good Morning to you too. I am responding to your post simply because it seems you are generalizing in all aspects of your post. When you generalize about nurses, you are generalizing about me..Your post has been read by a nurse who cares and is educated...me.
I will speak for myself and only for myself, because I think you might take it as this is how ALL nurses will feel about the issues you spoke of. As everyone has their own opinions and thoughts on a topic, I will refer to myself only.
If you think you might prefer the robot and your doctor, I wish you a speedy recovery, if and when you ever need to be hospitalized/cared for. I would like to hear more of your thoughts and ideas on the robot replacing a nurse, BTW, since you "think" you might prefer a robot..why? How will a robot CARE?, how are they educated?, (since these are your 2 main reasons for wanting them and doctors over nurses in the first place) I am not bashing you here..truly..enlighten me please.
Because I follow a doctor's order, that makes me task oriented, hmmm. I will let you think that then, but it isn't so in my case. I am patient oriented when I am on duty.
I have not asked for this type of replacement, please dont ASSUME anything, thank you.
I have furthered my education, and continue to further my education at my discretion. I feel your take on this does little to validate any of your claims.
I have great respect for other nurses and much respect for myself, especially as a nurse, since I do all I can for my pts. and then some... again you are generalizing when you post nurses have little respect for other nurses and very little for themselves, it reminds me not to.
I have done plenty and continue to do plenty to address issues and concerns that I personally have with the nursing profession, including recognition, if I choose not to post them here, that IS my choice, please don't ASSUME I haven't.
You said hospitals are not safe because of nursing.
It is really too bad you feel this way, but you have said you are looking to get out of nursing so maybe you don't feel a change in your perception is necessary. Are there ANY nurses you feel are good??
I understand you are feeling "sad" about the observations and feelings surrounding your profession. Sadness is Ok at times, I do believe we all feel sad at times, but bashing all nurses as you have here is not the way to deal with your sadness, IMO.
Best of luck to you in your future endeavors. I fear you might meet up with some of these same isssues in any field and sadness and bashing aren't going to inspire any changes there either, again,.. IMO.
You are entitled to post your opinions as I am entitled to mine, but please don't forget the nurses who do care, it seems you have you forgotten them. Main reason for my posting this: I DO care.
Only if you would like to share: why don't you have the calling to go forth and change things? I am hoping you are just having a bad day and maybe also your work/workload/environment/your own self-esteem cause you to lash out in this way, if this is the case, I truly hope your situation changes. I am always willing to give anyone the benefit of the doubt, but I could not stand by and let you put me in your future no nurse/robotic future without having my say.
Before I go, could someone direct me to the lounge, I haven't seen it in a very very long time.

Um, speak for yourself because you are definitely not speaking for all of us.

It probably will in time. From their website:
Future generations of the robot are being developed by InTouch to include arms so it can push wheelchairs,
open doors and take a patient's blood pressure, said company Chief Executive Officer Yulun Wang.
And more from the site:
There is a demographic crisis in healthcare. Over the next 10 years the number of elderly age 85 and over will grow 38% doubling the number of seniors requiring healthcare support. Already today there are over 400,000 unfilled nursing positions causing hospitals across the country to close wings or risk negative outcomes. Over the coming years, the declining ratio of working age adults to elderly will further exacerbate the shortage.
Don't kid yourself, this is coming. Sure, there will be many things they won't be able to do, but they will be able to do a variety of nursing and CNA function. These things are being utilized in many other fields with success. The bottom line is they save businesses money. You know what that means. Imagine sitting at the nurses station running this thing into different rooms to check on pts. Requires fewer nurse to pt ratio. In LTC they can run it at night checking on pts as they sleep. Fewer CNAs.
These things cost about $10.00per day. No salary to pay, no bennies, no call ins. True, they can't totally replace nurses, but they will cut down on number of nursing staff needed. They will quit trying to recruit men, and as for increasing nursing pay, it will keep the pay lower. It is market driven.
Surely you JEST. And does the robot somehow "detect" if the pt. happens to be SOB, or blue, or has actually taken the med, or is attemting to climb out of bed or pull out their IV? How can any bot ever replace a set of human eyes... or a human heart to "sense" a patient's emotional pain and recognize the need to intervene?
No way.
Sorry, I'm not buying this crapola.

No, I don't jest. I specifically said they couldn't totally replace the nurse. I said fewer would be needed. Have you ever seen the cameras that are used in casinos to watch the players? They have greater capabilities than your eye. The person running the robot could very well tell color of a pt, would be able to tell if a person was having labored breathing, if the robot was in the room with the camera on, yes it could watch a pt try to get out of bed or pull out an IV (would you be in the room during your whole shift watching for this?). If they are going to be able to do bp, you can bet they will be able to check pulseox. Do you really think a company just decided to spend millions of dollars to make these prototypes without doing research to see if there was a need? You don't have to buy into this "capola." The hospital or LTC facility will.
I'm sure if they will make the facility look good and save a $$$ (by staffing with less nurses) more robots will be developed.
We already have robots delivering trays and meds from pharmacy and the patients get a kick out of them. That in itself sells them to administrators.
We'll just have a few more robotic machines to monitor and troubleshoot, as (like all our other hi tech stuff), they always malfunction.
We talked about the Nursebots about a year ago...and had a laugh about 'em giving shots and dispensing meds. We pictured the Lost in Space Robot flailing his arms and calling "Warning Warning" while wielding a syringe....
Yeah I'd like one that cleans poop and vomit too. Maybe we can develop robotic beds like huge litter boxes that will clean and recycle an absorbant litter- like material...and slide a giant wetwipe down their backside for me too.....hehehe. I can dream, right?

Hmmm. I think I'll start working on that idea right away. Sounds like you could make more money selling these than nursing. If it works out I'll give you $100 for your idea!

Amen, sister! Preach! :)
Nurses who see things wrong report them to try and effect change, but those who like to gossip and pass negative criticism are never going to effect a positive change in nursing, and probably in their personal lives either. A grump is a grump that way.
