My first nursing text book was just delivered!!!! Now, if I can just make it through one more week of A&P, I can start reading "the real stuff!" The rest of my books are supposed to be here next week, too. I ordered them all online, from barnes & Noble, and saved over $150 from what my school was selling them for - all new!!!
Now, it's really starting to feel REAL!
You can find a lot of books you need at http://www.amazon.com I bought most of my books used there and they were just like new.
Another site to add to the list:
I bought my dosage book for the summer from them new, which was cheaper than what the bookstore was selling it used for.
I also bought a few more nursing books for the fall semester from them . They don't have free shipping or anything. They charge $2.79 per book, but it still was cheaper than any other place...I also used ecampus (as mentioned above).
Get as many used books on line as you can lay your hands on. I even look ahead to the other courses in my school and see what's required a semester or two away from now ... never too early to plan, to get your selection and best deals. Don't let the books intimidate you, either. From my experience, the teachers manage to whack them in half and use only bits and pieces in their lectures - they never cover every paragraph, it's impossible. Don't take in the whole picture all at once. Scan through the chapters a little before classes start, read a few paragraphs here and there. Try a couple of the questions at the end of the chapters, see how you do. I always find the chapter summaries or highlights very helpful at the end of the chapters -- kind of puts everything in a nutshell.
I have had success with sites such as http://www.half.com and http://www.textbookx.com. I also sell my books on half.com as well. Good luck with you book shopping!
Dang...checked out the Barnes and Noble site and found that the books cost exactly the same as school bookstore.....turns out our school bookstore is a B/N affiliate...oh well.
I am now just trying to recover from my initial shock upon seeing the length of my booklist! 12 books just for my nursing class! Yikes!
Renting works like this...
The college bookstore houses hundreds of books. When you pay your registeration/class fees you are charged $15.00 per book (book rental fee) and given a book store receipt. You take your receipt to the bookstore and receive your books. Of course, in nursing, this will not cover additional items such as Davis Drug book or PDRs. But, it sure has saved me some $$$.
We have 15 books to buy as well...
Holli, I envy you that it only cost you $390!! It will end up costing me about $800. There is a computer program we are required to have that is $150 alone. I almost got sick when I saw how many books we have to buy. Someone will need to go with me, because I won't be able to carry them all! Just one class has 8 books!!
Also, I will probably end up getting them all new...I have to wait for my FA check to come before I can purchase them (there isn't enough in our budget for me to get the books before the FA comes!) And I don't think there will be enough time to get them online, either.
Not only the textbooks....but has anyone got all their equipment yet??

Colleen10, don't feel bad, I felt the same way. But now after the classes looking back at them it makes me feel so good because I now know what the heck they where writing about.
