Hepatitis B Vaccine Safe?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am starting nursing school this fall and I need to decide whether or not to get the hepatitis b vaccine. I have been reading a lot about it and there is so much conflicting information. I wanted to know what people think about the vaccine and whether or not you have had it.

Thanks

ROFLOL, Just in case anyone here thinks that the CDC is a reliable ,credible, or unbiased source of information you should be aware that many of the same scientists that work for CDC have also worked for Big Pharm industry and sometimes even at the same time! You have any idea how much money Big Pharm industry spends lobbying in DC every year? The CDC is nothing but a political organization at best.

It's good to be informed before making a personal choice. Not one thing wrong with that.

For me, the benefits outweigh the risks, so I accepted the vaccine.

One must utilize all sources of information, take back to their healthcare provider and discuss, then make the same personal choice; yes or no.

In which case you might need to just make the best decision for yourself that you can based on the information you have found. You have to do what is best for YOU.

Consult your doctor is my advice.

There's an echo in here. I swear I was typing mine as you posted yours, sirI.

To answer the original question, I received the vaccine back when it first became available, would've been somewhere in the early 90s? I had Hep A as a child, and didn't relish the idea of having any other available strains, TYVM. I have had no ill effects.

[color=#1111cc]welcome to the vaccine education center | the children's hospital

the children's hospital of philadelphia's vaccine education center provides complete, up-to-date and reliable information about vaccines to parents and healthcare professionals. we provide videos, informational tear sheets, and information on every vaccine.

our resources explain how vaccines work, how they are made, who recommends vaccines, when they should be given, if they are still necessary, and, most importantly, if they are safe.

vaccines changed medicine

vaccines have literally transformed the landscape of medicine over the course of the 20th century. before vaccines, parents in the united states could expect that every year:

  • polio would paralyze 10,000 children.
  • rubella (german measles) would cause birth defects and mental retardation in as many as 20,000 newborns.
  • measles would infect about 4 million children, killing 3,000.
  • diphtheria would be one of the most common causes of death in school-aged children.
  • a bacterium called haemophilus influenzae type b (hib) would cause meningitis in 15,000 children, leaving many with permanent brain damage.
  • pertussis (whooping cough) would kill thousands of infants.

vaccines have reduced and, in some cases, eliminated many diseases that killed or severely disabled people just a few generations before. for most americans today, vaccines are a routine part of healthcare.

however, the disappearance of many childhood diseases has led some parents to question whether vaccines are still necessary. further, a growing number of parents are concerned that vaccines may actually be the cause of diseases such as autism, hyperactivity, developmental delay, attention deficit disorder, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and sudden infant death syndrome (sids) among others. these concerns have caused some parents to delay vaccines or withhold them altogether from their children. for more specific information on these concerns, visit the vaccine safety faqs section of our site.

I can't speak to safety, but I can tell you that it hurts like hell when they do the injection. Double the volume of other vaccines, I guess.

all I can say is forget AIDS... it's a fragile virus that lasts seconds on surfaces.. hepatitis B... lasts forever, on walls, light plates, computers, the door handles... it is a very verulent virus, a strong one that kills, a nasty death. I happily got my vaccine and get titers every year, this disease is what you need to fear... it is a killer of nurses.

How right you are. Now, we need to see a vaccine for HEP C!

I couldnt agree with you more!!!

No, this is why you need to make people like Anne36 back up their claims with evidence. Especially if you are going to let allow her claims to influence your thinking so much that you don't know what to believe.

She has made the claim that the CDC is "at best" a political organization like moveon.org or the Discovery Institute. It is a very serious accusation to which you are appearing to lend some weight.

Why? Why would you let a random poster on a public message board so confuse you without looking at their evidence? Evidence, by the way, would have to be obtained using a far more in depth search than a google search.

This current mania about the safety of vaccines is evidence that people will believe anything they want regardless of evidence. Vaccines have saved countless lives and when people start refusing them because of specious "boogyman" claims about the CDC, government, or science in general, people are going to die.
