HELP! I CAN'T FIND A JOB as a NEW GRAD RN

U.S.A. New York

Published

I've had my RN license for about 2 weeks and cant seem to find a job in the hospital. I have applied and literally talked to the Nursing Recruitment office at the VA who said Med-Surg was Full! Bellevue who said it takes 4-6 weeks to get a call back so jus drop off your resume. At NY Ear & Eye Infirmary who said jus drop off your resume at the Front Desk, Beth Israel & Lenox Hill said to wait and NYU & Columbia want BSNs.

I had interviews at two non-profit Clinics in the LES who pay ok but its a supervisor position as a new grad I need to get my feet wet!

So tell me where do I find a NYC hospital job as a new grad??

I am in the same situation like the rest of you guys. I took my boards at the end of November and have been actively looking for a job in Brooklyn, queens and Manhattan and still no luck. I've recently decided to try applying to a nursing home although this would not be my ideal place to work but its a start. I hope I hear back from hospitals soon.

Well looks like i'm in the same position as the last 3 of you guys.. I actually have my BSN and I still can't find a job :(. People have been telling me to look into agencies and even home care. I definitely feel like i'm going to forget everything i learned . Any info you guys have would be helpful!

Im STILL in the same boat as all of you. I Graduated in May, took the boards in Aug and I have only had ONE interview in september. What are all of you doing in the mean time? Are you still working? I havent worked since Sept. and im dreading the question about what have I been doing all this time. Like some others mentioned, I feel like i'

m also forgetting things from school. Are any of you doing reading ? Any suggestions on what to do with all this free time besides praying for a job?

I'm in the same boat with you. I graduated in May. Moved home, began job hunting early July. Waited on the NCLEX oping for a hospital review course. Interviewed at a hosp last week of Aug...went well but didn't work out; they were opening a new unit and I got lost in their "to do list" or something like that...Finally took the NCLEX in Nov. and passed! Still no job. Now I'm afraid I'm losing what I've learned. I feel like that "stale" bag of chips on the shelf. It's kinda why I joined the forum. Reading some of the informational blogs helps me recall and learn new things..still can't help but wonder. I tell people, that I've been looking for work. I mean job hunting really can be a 9-5, and it's the truth, I have been looking since July. Still hunting and hoping something will come along. There are also some direct hire recruiters that help place new grads with hospitals, though, I'll have to relocae. That's what I'm looking into now.

some employers do look at grades for new grads regardless of wether you passed NCLEX or not.

I am in the same boat too! Also looking into relocation to get that years worth of valuable experience.

Good luck!

I've spoek to some HR recruiters & they are well aware of what's going on. They say it's the econmoy nurses are no longer leaving their jobs due to the economy so their really isnt a need for new grads. I hope things get better it seems that if you do not have some sort of connection it's hard to find a job now as a new grad.

I do not know about LI or westchester/upstate, but I do know for a fact that most of the NYC hospitals are on a hiring freeze. HHC hospitals for sure, and I think some of the other major hospitals as well. Even experienced nurses are having a hard time finding a job.

They say that because of the bad economy, nurses are picking up OT and not leaving jobs which leaves no room to hire others. Personally I still think its BS, since there is no shortage of patients, and if you ask around its not like the nurses here are working with California like nurse to patient ratios. I guess the hospitals are just using the economy as an excuse since there really is no other way they can avoid hiring nurses.

I know this can't keep up very long, I'm sure that they will be back to hiring nurses soon. I wish all of you the best of luck!

i still haven't found anything. I sent my resume to so many places. I did have an interview at Interfaith medical center in brooklyn. They are hiring RNs. They seemed interested and they said they will try to get me into this orientation but I haven't heard a thing. I'm going to call them tomorrow to see what is going on. The area is pretty bad though but I'm so desperate! The other day I did 275 nclex questions so I won't forget a thing. Has anyone else found anything or have any leads?

alizae06 I'm seeing potential employers asking for grades too. Here in Metro Atlanta many hospitals are asking for nursing school transcripts along with reference letters and resumes.

I'm having the same trouble! I moved here from Austin late December, and I have no contacts in the area! I was talking with VNSNY, but they informed me the only openings they had were in the Bronx and Brooklyn and that I would need a car. I really wanted to work for them because I would eventually like to work in home health care/hospice. Does anyone else know of any good home health care agencies that hire new nurses?

Thanks everyone for posting. I feel like I'm not the only one who's getting desperate and feeling frustrated!

My fellow new grads, please try nursing homes. This was the only place I could get a job in this economy. The same thing happened with three of my former classmates. Two of them ended up doing nursing homes through and agency. Of those two, one of them found a full-time position directly through another nursing home within a month.

Also, some homecare agencies hire new grads. It may not be what you want to do, but if you want to get some experience and a way to pay your bills, look into agencies, nursing homes and homecare.

Good luck everyone.

I've been waiting on one HHC facility since September and another since November.
