HELP! I CAN'T FIND A JOB as a NEW GRAD RN

U.S.A. New York

Published

I've had my RN license for about 2 weeks and cant seem to find a job in the hospital. I have applied and literally talked to the Nursing Recruitment office at the VA who said Med-Surg was Full! Bellevue who said it takes 4-6 weeks to get a call back so jus drop off your resume. At NY Ear & Eye Infirmary who said jus drop off your resume at the Front Desk, Beth Israel & Lenox Hill said to wait and NYU & Columbia want BSNs.

I had interviews at two non-profit Clinics in the LES who pay ok but its a supervisor position as a new grad I need to get my feet wet!

So tell me where do I find a NYC hospital job as a new grad??

Shin up! You've been an RN for 2 weeks. that's it! When I finished my BA degree yrs ago it took me 6 months to get a job and I went on a bunch of interviews. I highly doubt it will take you that long...You will find something, Hang in there! :yeah:

Let us know when you find something.

Thanks, I think you're confusing me with someone else. I haven't even graduated yet (3 weeks!) But thanks, I will keep you posted. :)

Yeah! Got you confused with the OP who can't seem to find a job. Sorry.

Either way congrats on your upcoming graduation. Hope you find something as well. My turn will be in February. Good Luck.

Thanks! Good luck to you too.

I got a job. I took all the suggestions that were offered to me: Keep an open mind, be flexible about hours, and was willing to work in an area where there was a critical need and where they were willing to take a new grad.

You need to realize how many candidates waste the time of recruiters. Keep calling the recruiters so they remember your name.

Be willing to take any job the first year, because there is no nursing shortage when it comes to new grads in the NYC area. The rest of the U.S. has a critical nursing shortage.

Even if you are called for an interview, there is still a processing time from interview to hire date.

Have you looked into the Caritas system (Mary Immaculate Hospital, Wyckoff Heights & St. John's)? All the union rates are basically the same in NYC, Queens and Brooklyn.

If you have done internships or externships anywhere, be persistent with those hospitals - as you will be on a "preferred" hiring list.

Good luck.

Congrats on your NCLEX!! :yeah: i am too a graduate from a ADN (CUNY BMCC) and know of 2 graduates from last year who went to Lenox Hill on something LH had - like an interview day and were offered jobs on the spot after interviewing with recruiters. So if you really want LH, call and see if and when they are holding that again. I know specifically that if you call HR and see, they will tell you. Also check your PM after this...

I don't know if you REALLY want to work in a hospital, but VNSNY also has a year internship for ADN wanting to pursue a career in home care. I got accepted to their internship to start next month and cannot wait. Also try the HUGE nursing fair at MSG on 9/11. I believe advance for nurses is doing that fair. Good luck and DON't SETTLE for ANY job either - you need to be happy and not jeopardize your license :nurse:

quick question, for all the new grads who ended up getting a job, were you only offered nights? I know for the most part nights are a given for new grads but having never done it before as an LPN, im actually quite nervous about it. So are there any chances for days?

I was offered nights at first when I interviewed with the nurse manager, and I said that I REALLY had to think about it cause I hated nights. I called two weeks later to accept the night position, the position was still open and they hired me on days! Ask for what YOU want, it goes both ways... You need I job, but they need nurses! :) Good Luck!
