HELP! I CAN'T FIND A JOB as a NEW GRAD RN

U.S.A. New York

Published

I've had my RN license for about 2 weeks and cant seem to find a job in the hospital. I have applied and literally talked to the Nursing Recruitment office at the VA who said Med-Surg was Full! Bellevue who said it takes 4-6 weeks to get a call back so jus drop off your resume. At NY Ear & Eye Infirmary who said jus drop off your resume at the Front Desk, Beth Israel & Lenox Hill said to wait and NYU & Columbia want BSNs.

I had interviews at two non-profit Clinics in the LES who pay ok but its a supervisor position as a new grad I need to get my feet wet!

So tell me where do I find a NYC hospital job as a new grad??

Specializes in OR.
dont worry i'm in the same boat, graduated in june got my license almost a month ago and still no one has called, applyed all over... i know im supposed to wait and see what happens; but when you're in school and they tell you that there is a big demand for nurses and you go around looking for a job and they give you the run around it gets discoraging.....:banghead: i have been turned down by some hospitals because i dont have a BNS, i feel discriminated against because after all we're all nurses and we all take the same NCLEX exam :angryfire

Well good news! i got a job at Terrance Cardinal Cooke on the UES. Not a big name hospital but its a start. So I got all my paperwork processed in one day and i start Aug11! Part time until a full time spot opens up but great pay $38/hr so starting part time wont bother me one bit. Since during nursing school I was working per diem to barely pay rent. Now I dont have to worry about $$ anymore!!

Specializes in acute care.

$38/hr, that's great! Congrats!

I learned at a recruiting lecture today that there is no nursing shortage in NYC. A lot of the NYC nursing school students are taking the NCLEX now and in August. Search out the job fairs -- a few of my colleagues got interviews just by going to job fairs and then got employment. I also learned it takes about one month from interview to start date at a lot of places. The recruiter said it also helps to be persistent with follow-up phone calls after you submit a resume.

There are jobs but you have to keep an open mind and be willing to take on a position that may be on a night shift or in an area of medicine that you are not interested in. Most of the specialty units want at least 1 year of med-surg experience.

Mount Sinai has a lot of jobs on their website.

Go to Monster.com. There are almost 500 nursing jobs listed.

I'm currently being processed for employment and the hospital where I applied knows I am open to any position available and I was told "not to worry."

Specializes in pediatrics, oncology.

Mt Sinai does have a lot of jobs listed, though they recommend not applying to more than 3 at one time. Also, when you call to follow up, they don't talk to you; they tell you to wait till you hear something through the website/email. It seems so impersonal to me. :(

i know i went several times and they just blow you off, they tell you to apply only and then when you call they say wait, if you go to the nursing recruter office and ask to speak to her the receptionist always blow you off, makes you dont want to work there eventhough you might be desperetly looking for a job. i dont know what else to do i graduated with a ADN and it seems like every hospital want nurses with BSN's.... now i'm starting to wonder if i'll ever get a job.... i know i should have patience but time is passing by and no one has called me!:sniff:

HELLO,

you also have to take into consideration your cum. score from school and the grade you received on the NC LEX. I am 100% sure they look at this , and also the hospitals in NYC is were everyone wants to be. Try applying to some hospitals on the Island. I know of one person who as a new graduate got hired at St Francis the heart hospital and her starting salary is $65K.

Don't give up there is a job out there for you and a hospital that needs you.:nurse:

Good Luck!

Oh yes, also try calling HR every other day and eventually they will see that your no joke and that you are really interested in the position.:D

It is my understanding that you do not receive a grade on the NCLEX. You either pass it or fail it.

Good luck to everyone, stay positive, you will find something.

There's no such thing as a "nursing shortage"! :sniff:

Ive been applying almost everywhere in the city for two weeks now.

I called Mount Sinai and they told me to wait for a call... (great!)

I received an email from NYP, saying all their new graduate positions were full, that they would contact me in the future.

I'm a registered nurse in NY, have an internship and a externship experience, a BSN with high honors, and a speak, write, and read perfect Spanish!

Im preparing myself to go personally to every hospital during this week to hand out all my documents and request an interview !!!

I don't know what else to do ! Good luck to everyone! :nurse:

Has anyone heard about a career/job fair in NY?

Have you tried to look in places besides NYC. Like on Long Island, Queens & Brooklyn & teh Bronx. Most of these hospitals in thsoe areas are hiring also a few hospitals in Westchester area. Manhattan is very competive at this moment.

Good Luck. i am keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Shin up! You've been an RN for 2 weeks. that's it! When I finished my BA degree yrs ago it took me 6 months to get a job and I went on a bunch of interviews. I highly doubt it will take you that long...You will find something, Hang in there! :yeah:

Let us know when you find something.
