There's a petition on a website to have nurse Kaci Hickox's license revoked for refusing quarantine after working directly with Ebola patients in West africa.
What panicking and freaking out are you referring to?Holding an opinion that quarantine is reasonable is not to panic or freak out.
Oh, you know, stuff like saying "if the virus can remain infectious on surfaces up to 50 days" is sorta freaking out and probably being read and believed by an already hysterical public. Unsubstantiated statements like this, and there are many on this forum, make me embarrassed to be a nurse. Thank God for the Kacis in the US!
Wait...let me make sure I got this right. You are demanding that Kaci be quarantined on the very rare chance that she could transmit the disease, yet you, as a health care worker, refuse to get the flu vax? A vax that has been well documented to prevent the spread of flu? Your personal decision puts your patients and others in the community at risk of contracting flu, esp. patients who are immunocompromised, e.g. cancer patients. You accuse Kaci of being selfish? Wow. Just...wow.
Exactly why, along with many of her posts, I think she's toying with us. (I think there's an internet word for that.)
I swore I was done with this, but since there has been a question about how asthma could be considered a disease that compromises the immune system, I C&P this from the website that lists myths and facts about FluMist.
[h=4]Myth[/h]All patients in close contact with immunocompromised persons should not receive FluMist Quadrivalent.
[h=4]Fact[/h]Vaccine recipients or their parents/guardians should be informed by the healthcare provider that FluMist Quadrivalent is an attenuated live virus vaccine and has the potential for transmission to immunocompromised household contacts.1
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (CDC/ACIP), transmission from a recently vaccinated person causing illness in an immunocompromised contact has not, to date, been reported.6
The CDC states that people, including healthcare professionals, who are in contact with individuals with weakened immune systems (e.g., people with diabetes, people with asthma taking corticosteroids, or people infected with HIV) can still get FluMist Quadrivalent.7

I don't know if anyone else noticed, but it appears that this may be the only thread the person in question has participated in.
She he appears to be primarily interested in being provacative. The judge ruled, and there is nothing more to be said at this point...let's all let the thread die and drop to the bottom.
To OCNRN, the key word in that sentence is "taking corticosteroids." I have asthma, and do not take corticosteroids. I have an albuterol inhaler. Either way, I agree. Let the thread die. When it gets to the point that adults begin to insult and/or disrespect one another to prove a point, I think it's time let it go. So farewell ladies and gents
" They never developed it"They're developing it now.
Yes, due to the sheer number of infected people in W. Africa, one healthcare worker and one Liberian citizen have developed it in the US, but acquired it in W. Africa. Neither of those people spread it to the general public. It has a reproduction rate lower than HIV and equivalent with hepatitis C.
I don't think it's professional for healthcare personnel to take part in mass panic and fear mongering. The general public is scared out of their damn wits, and we're not helping matters by agreeing that one of our own should be quarantined over a virus that is not easily transmissible when contagious and isn't transmissible at all without symptoms.

I was just reading other threads and noticed they had not been infected. I came back here to post that observation and to say I will no longer be posting to this thread. Yes, let the thread die! Thanks, Mr. Chicago!

This!!!!! A billion likes. The poster contradicts herself. It's a shame when healthcare workers contribute to the public hysteria over personal hang ups!!

Not just selfish. Selfish and entitled. I wonder if she isolated herself when she had H1N1?
Sure do...how is it that you fight a quarantine, but insist that I take a vaccination that apparently doesn't react well with me. If it did that to my arm, I only can imagine what would happen if I take it nasally. Are you afraid of the flu, but not Ebola? Does the thought of me sneezing haunt you in your sleep like the boogey man. At least if you were to catch the flu from me, you can take Tamiflu. What are you gonna take when Kaci gives you Ebola lol?
How is it that you insist upon quarantining a healthy individual who shows no signs of illness, and upon quarantining that person without due process, but insist that you're OK without flu vaccine because the injection technique left a "baseball sized knot" on your deltoid? Flu is a far bigger risk to our patients than ebola, no matter HOW hysterical you get about the latter. It is irresponsible and unprofessional to NOT vaccinate yourself if you are interacting with vulnerable populations. And since you're so tweaked about your child crawling around on surfaces that are possibly teaming with bacteria (and viruses), my guess is you ARE interacting with a vulnerable population.
It's a hypocritical argument.

"OK . . . I'll bite. No, I don't agree. You said: "Or how about that r/o TB patient that we place in a negative pressure room because their X-Ray came back suspect. I bet you don't walk into their room with an N95, and surely know that none of you nurses are going to let that patient roam the halls as you wait for their PPD."
This implies that you are going to put someone with suspect CXR into isolation WHILE YOU WAIT FOR RESULTS OF A PPD TEST TO BE DETERMINED. First off, the PPD doesn't confirm TB and second, even if it did, that would take three days. Usually, people get a PPD, if it's positive, then CXR . . . not CXR and then PPD. So you're wrong or you worded it poorly, which you do a lot of.
What I'm reading in what mariebailey wrote: yes someone with suspect CXR is isolated (of course). But she is not saying that a PPD is then done. I believe the next step is AFB smears.
Now, go get your flu shot or you may infect your whole family. Do you know how many children die from flu each year???? Do you realize you already put your child at risk??? Sorry, but you absolutely nothing believable to say about quarantines.
