Help me bring this into the public!

There's a petition on a website to have nurse Kaci Hickox's license revoked for refusing quarantine after working directly with Ebola patients in West africa.

Remember we panicked about Y2K, 2012, Mad Cow, Swine Flu, etc.

Speak for yourself -- "we" didn't all panic. And are you really comparing spreading misinformation about Ebola with not telling your children the truth about Santa???

Off the subject, & we do see eye to eye on the topic of quarantine for Ebola-exposed nurse. As a TB case manager, I isolated plenty of people with CXRs consistent with TB prior to having a positive PPD. We even isolated plenty of people with negative PPDs who had signs/symptoms. PPDs, ironically, often come back negative at the peak of active TB b/c their immune systems are too weak from fighting TB to bother to respond to a silly little PPD.

I understand isolating the pt with CXRs consistent with TB without PPD, but then you do a PPD while they are in isolation as opposed to AFB smears? Thanks, mariebailey!

Flalleycat, I said the exact same thing so now you agree?

How many people do you think have come to the US over the years directly from "Ebola land". For years, American citizens have been volunteering to help and then coming back home. They never developed it nor did they spread it.

Well I had the flu already, H1N1 to be exact.. Hurt like the dickens too, but not bad enough for me to get vaccinated in the future lol. It should be apparent by now that I have trust issues as it relates to healthcare practices :sniff:.

Wait...let me make sure I got this right. You are demanding that Kaci be quarantined on the very rare chance that she could transmit the disease, yet you, as a health care worker, refuse to get the flu vax? A vax that has been well documented to prevent the spread of flu? Your personal decision puts your patients and others in the community at risk of contracting flu, esp. patients who are immunocompromised, e.g. cancer patients.

You accuse Kaci of being selfish? Wow. Just...wow.

" They never developed it"

They're developing it now. :sarcastic:

One of the problems with doing something like this is it isn't anonymous. In just a couple of clicks, I had the OP's full name and the city and state in which he resides. The same information could be found for everyone else who signed the petition. Like I said, anonymous isn't always anonymous.

Yes, three people so far (Brantly, Writebol, and Spencer -- am I forgetting anyone?), out of how many Americans who have volunteered in Ebola hot zones over the decades?? I don't find that a panic-worthy statistic. But I guess that's just me.

(snip)

Do you think that the moment someone begins to exhibit symptoms their viral load is instantaneously so high that they can somehow infect anyone in their immediate vicinity? That study neither suggests it nor proves it.

To be fair, this is the thought I'd had initially when beginning to research what is known about the virus. I actually ended up making a number of calls to old professors and their colleagues to get some answers. After giving the subject due diligence, I changed my opinion on the matter. And the reading is far from over on this.

The post I quoted wasn't made by you, and the point is, be precise.

Did I say it was a panic-worthy statistic?

OCNRN, I'll take my chances like Kaci. When I felt sick I stayed home. And if I feel sick in the future, I will stay home. *Adds sarcasm* Fortunate for me, I didn't die or bleed to death despite only having a headache at best. Aside from the fact that first flu shot I ever received literally left a baseball sized knot in my deltoid, I think with the way a lot of these nurses on here think, they'll be ok one way or another. So what is your next point?

Do you remember how influenza is spread? Based on your response, I'm guessing not so much.

If you "literally" had a baseball sized knot in your deltoid, I'm surprised you were able to keep your arm. Compartment syndrome can be a nasty business.
