we've been having heated - but not yet angry - discussions

Nurses General Nursing

Published

regarding the provision of medical services to undocumented residents - illegal aliens. As students, we've had the opportunity this semester to have clinical experiences that include being with community nurses as they make well-baby visits to the new parents. Seems as if we've all noticed a vast percentage have been to undocumented families.

We're a divided bunch. Some of us can't afford insurance while in school and yet see these families recieving services that they can't get. We've discussed the morals of providing health care to all/any who are in need. The ever-present problems of limited budgeting. Today it was mentioned about the helicopter crash this weekend in Texas. An undocumented mother and her ill child were being flown somewhere for treatment when the helicopter went down. Pilot, mother, baby died. The nurse was critically injured.

A long-time L&D nurse at one of the local hospitals commented when I asked her what her thoughts were (she has some interesting experiences as a Peace Corp nurse in South America, a more global view of nursing than is usually seen here in the midwest) "Well, I've never had to do a drug test on an Hispanic mother, I've never had to call in family services for suspected abuse. I have done these many, many times for 'our own white trailer trash' American residents." She'd rather see the young families have a chance at a healthy start.

It's a puzzlement to me. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Much of my concern is linked to budget. I just see a greater and greater drain on an extremely overtaxed system already. If we have to limit our services - should not our own citizens recieve the first services available?

arghhhhhhhhhhhhh - these ethical discussions make my head spin sometimes. I think I know what I believe and then someone makes a good point and I have to reconsider what I have already concluded to be true.

I feel like Eeyore.... think, think, think, think, think

I just don't agree with the current 'get something for nothing' practices in our welfare and social systems. It begets nothing good for people to be given something without any responsibility in return, in my experience. We all come from different backgrounds and experiences and our beliefs spring from that. I cannot in good faith support a liberal Democrat because that party has established our current socialist system and caters to votes from the have nots and willnots to keep their power.

Those of you who wish to volunteer your time to nursing care for the huddled masses, just go ahead. BUT do not dare tell me that I don't deserve to be a nurse because I choose not to. I'm not Mother Theresa and being deity on earth has never been a requirement to become a nurse.

Some very small minds on this thread, IMO. I don't care to remain. Have fun.

I do not think it is necessary to resort to "name-calling" to try to get your point across. The fact is, people, no matter what their situation, deserves health care. Enough said.

The problem is that not everyone is getting it, and yes i will say that it infuriates me that we have a state-funded healthcare program (in my town here) that caters to a specific ethnicity of pregnant women, but i can't even go to the free clinic when i have pneumonia, because i "make too much according to their scale" (anything over 11,000 is considered too much by the county, and i barely make over that. But i make TOO much MONEY?? Bull****!).

So yes i am beyond peeved because i'm paying taxes for crap i can't use, even though i AM in need. And it ticks me off (about that local program) that an illegal resident of this country has access to healthcare because of where she came from, and having her 6th kid, all expenses paid by guess who.

This does not make me prejudiced or racist (or small minded), this makes me fed up for working 2 jobs to pay the bills, paying my own tuition, going to school, and STILL can't get antibiotics without going to the ER, and KNOWING that there are plenty of people in the same situation, barely making ends meet, and in the process being told that they don't qualify for any sort of assistance.

Paying Taxes in this country is a right and a privilege

Just lets use them for something other than bushies war

FABULOUS post all around!!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!!

While I am willing and able to see all sides of this debate I am fed up with being unable to get the help that my family needs to survive as well.

AND, I would NEVER refuse to treat an illegal alien or treat them any differently than anyone else, though I have not been put into that situation yet. It will be my job.

Again, Marie...I loved your post!

I don't think anyone is saying that they don't deserve healthcare, but I myself am disagreeing with people coming in to our country JUST to get free healthcare for whatever reason. I can't get free healthcare for my family, so why should people just coming here specifically to do just that get it? It makes no rational sense.

Amen to that!

Hopefully not driving across a bridge somewhere. Just couldn't resist; the devil made me do it!

wow- I have been watching this board for a while, and it is really starting to scare me. People are people, who all feel pain and who all want to have a good life for their families. I dont care where people are from or how they got here. The fact is those of us who were born in America basically won the genetic lottery. Its not like we did something great to deserve to be born here, it was just good luck compared with comparatively crappy luck for a guy who got born in an alley in Tijuana. i dont know about you, but I dont look down on people who didn't win the genetic lottery. Bickering over politics is childish when there are people who need help.

We are but a little patch on this planet....we cannot support everyone.

Anyone who needs emergent care should be taken care of, citizens and vistors alike.

Our Seniors are struggling and that situation will continue to worsen as the Babyboomers age... how can we justify allowing more people in who cannot support themselves?

Let those who are here and who can support themselves fully stay and have citizenship. Allow work visas for those who can secure jobs. But the line has to be drawn somewhere.

I do agree with a few points that you make. However, as far as your last quote "Let those who are here and can fully support themselves stay and have citizenship." What about the american citizens on welfare ...families, generation after generation, who sit at home having baby after baby, not willing to work, just so they can draw a larger welfare check??? What about them??? I do not feel that is fair either! So, what do we do with them??? Do we kick them out of the country just because they do not meet our idea of the ideal citizen?? They are american born? Where do we send them?? They shouldn't be allowed to stay here because they do not want to support themselves???!!!
