what have you heard about LIU nursing program?

U.S.A. New York

I've never really heard much about it, but I have heard that LIU in itself is a good school?? is this true? please tell me what you know about the nursing program. how difficult is it to get into?

I was notified today that I was accepted into the accelerated nursing program but need to take the HESI exam still. Does anyone know how often it is offered and how many times you can take it?

You would need to call the nursing dept but usually they have tests 3-4 times a month on Friday's and Saturday's. You have to register in person for the exam along with a $30 money order/check. You can only take it twice and only once in a semester. So for example, if you were taking it in May to start in the summer semester or something and failed, you'd have to wait until about August to re-take it and start in the fall semester.

Wow pressure is on! That makes me so nervous to know that is I don't do well then I wont be able to begin the program... Do you have any advice for prepping for the exam?

I actually applied in January if not earlier but something went wrong with their system and my application did not get reviewed so once I called everything went through. I recommend you call the nursing advising office and ask them when you will hear a decision and tell them when you applied.

I have its hard to get them on the phone. Its so frustrating but im still waiting.thanks

Does anyone know what cost of the full 15 months for the accelerated program works out to be? Also, if there is anyone who is in the accelerated program currently that I could speak with that would be amazing! I am hearing such mixed things about the nursing program at LIU but not specifically the accelerated program because it is so new. I have also been accepted to Molloy college but I am leaning towards LIU because it would be only 15 months compared to the 2 years I would spend at Molloy. Do any nurses in the NYC area have recommendations as far as which school would be better to attend when related to job outcome.

Hi blsliter,

I was not in the accelerated program, but for my two years at LIU my tuition ranged from $13,000-$18,000 per semester. It might be a little more since you'd be taking more credits in a shorter period of time?

As far as which school would be better for you to attend in r/t to job outcome...

I think all new grads in all 5 boroughs are in the same boat: Unemployed.

Even experienced nurses are having difficulty finding work.

One major suggestion, whether you choose LIU, Molloy, or another school:

make sure to apply for a Student Nurse Externship/Internship or apply for a part time position as a nursing assistant or aide. It isn't a guarantee that you will get an RN position at that facility, but it will help.

The best of luck to you!

LIU is about 900 and something per credit, and you need about 75-78 credits for the accelerated program, or 2 yr program (same amount of credits just longer time)... do the math its veryyy expensive, LiU has one of the highest tuitions in the 5 boroughs. BUT if thats the only school that will a) accept you b) may be the only school that is location wise accesable to you c) may be the only school that works with your schedule, etc etc, it may be the school for you. ive heard mixed reviews about the school itself, but i actually went in person the other day, and left with a completly different outlook about LIU! i was pleasantly surprised:) Nursing school at any school, is most of the time what you make out of it. If you are a good student and are dedicated to your studies and career, you will do fine. These schools can't all be "that bad", for some reason they are still open and running, ya know? Theres gotta be some good that comes out of it. As for malloy, honestly i dont know anything about them, all i know is that its in Long Island, and im suspectig it's a great school bc i've heard other people inquire about it. So bottom line is: focus in getting in to all the schools you are thinking about applying to... if you get in/when you get in: narrow down your choices by which school will be more convenient for you, your life style, your family, your financial situation, your geographic location, etc etc... hope this helps!! and goodluck :))

Congrats!

Im not sure, Im def. going to orientation, Id agree in terms of communication with LIU....its pretty poor. Im still not sure what my schedule is going to look like or what options I have to maintain a FT status during every semester till graduation.

Im waiting for a reply, hopefully I get info sooner than later but its frustrating because Ive been there in person about 3-4 times now and I feel like Im still unaware of my options

UPDATE: Im still waiting for info from the LIU RN-BSN program as to how many credits I will need (exactly). Im so frustrated, I hate to pester but I deserve to know where I stand so I can plan accordingly, Ive already been admitted and such, I dont understand what the wait is for, they can at least be up front about it.

not happy so far!

To sea-of-roses,

Hello, don't be discouraged. I felt the same way in the beginning- I was very unsure about what LIU needed me to take and where I stood in their program. However, after setting up a meeting with one of the Nursing Academic Advisors, and actually going to the school in person to speak with them- everything changed. They are so much more helpful when you make the effort to visit them and tell them your story. Afterall, that's what academic advisors are there for, to guide and give you advice about which route to take inorder to obtain your degree. It's normal to feel frustrated... and when you are on that train ride to Brooklyn, you will get goosebumps because you are actually making things happen! Go for it, and good luck!:D

Hi, thanks for the kind words, Ive been there in person a few times already, Im planning to go again and after reaching out to the dean of nursing MULTIPLE times Im hoping she can clarify once and for all then. Keeping my fingers crossed

I got into the accelerated program at liu. I went there yesterday since its impossible to get in contact with them and there is little info on the website. I also go into NYU and visited there first. I was actually really impressed with liu and the people who worked there. They were all so helpful and gave me a really good feeling about the program. It seems that if you are willing to reach out and make an effort, they are as well. For me, NYU obviously has an amazing reputation but that comes with an 88,000 dollar price tag. To me, LIU seems cheap. Especially because I wouldn't have to move.

My biggest concern with LIU is that they have a bad reputation and I won't be able to get a job when I graduate. Could anyone who is in the nursing program now tell me how the program was this year? I know everyone complains about med math, but they've added a lot more required medmath classes to help everyone with passing...so to me it seems like they listen to their students and adjust? or is this just how they make you feel in the beginning?

Thanks!!
