Published

Ok folks, time has come to Start anew.......over 1000 posts means LOTS of bandwidth use here at allnurses.com. So I have been asked to remedy the situation.....

Anyhow, I have enjoyed so much your sharing, help and support here on the Healthier Living Thread....let's keep it up!!!!!:)

QOD: What is your favorite "old" or "new" healthy food/recipe? Care to share?

I have "rediscovered" oatmeal. Yep old fashioned good ole Quaker Oats-----the slow cooked kind.....with raisins, a bit of cinnamon and some Splenda.....YUMMY. Eating this as my dh's cholesterol and lipid counts were very high---trying to clean up my own dietary practices to help him with his....anyhow.....

Anyone else? As you change/grow/develop new tastes, what are your "old" or "new" healthier-choice favorites??? Care to share????

Thanks for the recipe Deb, sounds delish. I do not like the low carb pastas at all. But I do go whole grain. :)

.....................................keep on posting folks. and yes i think we need a "healthy recipe" posting here...............

since i don't cook much anymore...kids grown and all....the healthiest dishes i put together for myself on a regular basis are as follows:

fruit shake: when i used to drink soy milk, i mixed soy milk (you can use other milks though) with bananas, strawberries, a tsp of honey, put it all in the blender and blended it together....great tastin' shake! :) i also used blueberries, pineapples, and orange slices at times. do your own thing...whatever your taste may be.

salads: a mix of green salads with either chicken, tuna, salmon, or chopped breast turkey meat mixed in. add fresh mushrooms, peas, sliced tomatoes, bacon bits or freshly fried bacon pieces, chopped boiled egg, two tablespoons of ranch dressing, or bleu cheese dressing, or miracle whip and you have a luscious salad. i eat them for dinner or lunch at times. :)

macaroni and salmon salad: (great for fixin' in the summer months...quick, easy, little cooking required): cook elbow macaroni or bowtie macaroni until done. let cool. drain one large can of salmon. leave the bones in the salmon for more calcium. mix macaroni, salmon, can of drained peas, chopped boiled eggs, chopped celery, chopped green bell pepper, a dash of grounded pepper, and enough miracle whip (or mayonnaise) to moisten the ingredients; stir all ingredients together, then sprinkle top of mixed food with paprika for taste. chill, and enjoy. goes great with fruit of your choice as a side dish. enjoy! :)

those are three of my favorite dishes to munch on. i'll post more later. :)

deb.........i am sooooooo ready to make your clam chowder soup! as soon as i get all the ingredients, i'm going to make it. i like oyster crackers with my clam chowder soup. :)

Hi Chelly! I might have missed it, but what is "Seatlle Sutton"???

Take a block to extra firm tofu and cut it into slices. Wrap in paper towels, and then wrap in a dish towel. Put wrapped tofu on a plate and stack a bunch of plates on top of this. This will squeeze out the water. Then slice and dice red peppers, onions, garlic, broccolli, carrots, whatever and get a nice teriyaki sauce or other stir fry sauce. By now the tofu is drained and can absorb the sauces. I use peanut oil or canola oil. I made some yesterday. Don't forget to add the hot chilis.

Just wanted to give a "Tofu Lesson". Woot!

Hey Tweety! Seattle Sutton is a person actually. She's a nurse making a fortune mass producing balanced diets. 1200 or 2000 calorie, all the meals are prepared so its real convenient and we like the food. It's just food though no meetings or weigh ins or contracts.

Being Italian we have marinara (gravy) every Sunday. It's a simple recipie, we don't put a lot of stuff in it as is the American way. I've it changed slightly to make it a little healthier. No one knows the difference.

1 large can crushed tomatoes

1 small can tomato paste

Italian seasoning and fresh basil to taste

A dash of splenda

A tablespoon of parm/romano powdered cheese (used to use half a gallon  )

Add up to one can of water for desired thickness.

Turkey Meatballs

1 pound of ground turkey

1 egg white

2 slices of bread crumbled or 1/2 C bread crumbs

Garlic cloves or powder to taste

1 tablespoon of parm/romano powdered cheese

Spray pan with olive oil cooking spray then add rolled meatballs.

Cover until outsides of meatballs are cooked then uncover and brown.

Spray the meatballs with cooking spray if they don't want to brown.

Bring sauce to boil.

Add meatballs to sauce and simmer 1-2 hours.

I use whole grain pasta too - the low carb ones seem mushy.

Gonna have to try that sauce Deb.

What do I do when I hit a hard patch? If I can make myself just get some kind of exercise, it pulls me out it. But I don't always succeed.

I don't think there is a magic spell . . . . sometimes something works for you and sometimes it doesn't. Just forgive yourself for the rough patch and go on.

Last time I checked, we aren't perfect.

Finally peeking into the new thread to say "hi." Not sure what my status is on the healthy living lately... I've been better about not stepping on the scale, but not so good on the working out and food is iffy. Oh well, it's a process. Did have a delicious dinner last night... I had some marinara sauce I'd made a while back and put that over some Barilla Plus spaghetti. I really like that stuff, it doesn't taste all that far off from regular pasta but has more fiber and protein since it's made with flaxseed, chick peas, etc. I've tried whole wheat pasta before but decided I'd rather chew on the box it came in, so this is a good compromise. Also had a baby spinach, red pepper, grape tomato, and cucumber salad with fresh French vinaigrette dressing, and garlic bread made with whole wheat flour (not 100% but at least a little healthier than regular white bread). Enjoyed a glass of red wine, too. It was very satisfying.

Deb, I wouldn't fret over the comfort food dinner. I think we need to indulge every once in a while, and as you said, you felt very satisfied afterwards. A true falling-off-the-wagon moment is when you go through the kitchen, or grocery store, or fast-food drive-thru and get a bunch of stuff you don't really want and don't derive any true joy from. The satisfaction signals that this was simply a good meal. Go back to your healthier habits today, and don't spend any time regretting that one meal.
