No - The ruling allows bosses to impose their religious beliefs on their employees. Besides, the Constitution grants religious freedom to individuals, not corporations.

Yes - The religious beliefs of company owners take precedence over their employees' right to have access to birth control.

Should religious family-owned companies be required to cover contraceptives under their insurance plans? The high court says no.

I'm curious how you nurses feel about this? Please take a second to vote in our quick poll.

This is a highly political topic, I'd rather not turn this into a hot argumentative subject, so please keep your comments civil :) But please feel free to comment. Thanks

Hobby Lobby Ruling Cuts Into Contraceptive Mandate

2014-07-01_10-15-32.png

In a 5-4 decision Monday, the Supreme Court allowed a key exemption to the health law's contraception coverage requirements when it ruled that closely held for-profit businesses could assert a religious objection to the Obama administration's regulations. What does it mean? Here are some questions and answers about the case. What did the court's ruling do?

The court's majority said that the for-profit companies that filed suit-Hobby Lobby Stores, a nationwide chain of 500 arts and crafts stores, and Conestoga Wood Specialties, a maker of custom cabinets-didn't have to offer female employeesall Food and Drug Administration-approved contraceptivesas part of a package of preventive services that must be covered without copays or deductibles under the law. The companies had argued that several types of contraceptivesviolate their owners' religious beliefs. The ruling also covers a Hobby Lobby subsidiary, the Mardel Christian bookstores.

God will judge all of you that collaborated indirectly to a killing of an innocent.

As you have yet to even begin your nursing journey it is important to understand it is not for the nurse to judge her patients choices. We deliver all care equally to ALL of our patients WITHOUT judgement. Our personal feelings have NO bearing on how or to whom we deliver care to. Our responsibility is to advocate for our patients, without prejudice, regardless of race, religion or choices that they make.

We do not judge our patients harshly.

Because there are too many damn kids. It's interesting how concerned some people are about potential fertilized eggs but are not the least bit concerned when those potentialities become actual human beings with needs. Then their food stamps get cut because "people shouldn't get free stuff"

I want to like this 400x.

One point I haven't yet seen mentioned is that HL doesn't even really pay directly for said birth control. It's a part of the health care plan they offer. Whether or not a woman chooses to have an IUD or obtain emergency contraception, HL's bills don't change. They pay the same premium regardless.

In post 274 you stated that sex is a basic human need according to Maslow's hierarchy. But in this one, you suggest that the PP should advocate for abstinence for women looking to avoid pregnancy. Let's also not fall into the fallacy that all women who get pregnant do so consensually.

Or that birth control works 100% of the time.

Emergency contraception does not terminate pregnancy. If Hobby Lobby allows their employees to procure most forms of hormonal birth control, they will have emergency contraception, anyway. Their suit was bogus to begin with. They invest in emergency contraception.

Exactly. EC is basically turbo BCP. We're not talking about RU-486 here, folks.

So your employer should get approval over how you treat your testicular cancer. If they believe that testicular cancer is caused by demons, your only treatment option is exorcism? After all, you want everyone out of your business, then you shouldn't expect them to contribute financially to your choice of healthcare.

No, just, you know, quit your job with your testicular cancer and go find other work. Easy peasy! :) Or better yet, go buy your own insurance with that diagnosis.

Or, maybe, let patients and providers work together, and make their own decisions about care, without employers weighing in on the decision.

Shocking that something like this case is acceptable or even considered in this country.

Wow, now they are villlified for being overly-generous?!?!? This company cannot win with you. These fictional women should go back to school and better themselves if they need more. I did it at 34 with four kids. It can be done. Many grants and low interest loans can be had and the state even offers childcare to those who may neef it.

Wow. Easier said than done. How many of us did just that and are working in retail (at $9 an hour, no less) with a BSN? *hand raised*

Even for people with a degree, the job market is tough. It's not so easy to just "go find new work." You cannot possibly be that naive.

Emergency contraception (except Ella) is available OTC, right?? Clearly, using it cannot be confused with having an abortion. It is simple contraception....of the emergency variety. The AAP recommends having some on hand....

What if an employee is raped and is administered EC in the emergency dept? Still no coverage, right? They would have to deny to be consistent in their beliefs. I wonder if they are.

Given that this "get another job" response seems to be a very popular notion amongst "conservative" citizens who celebrate this SCOTUS foolishness, I would say that yes, many people are exactly that naive.

The Planned Parenthood Clinic in Aurora, CO recently got an award for "surpassing" their abortion goals. I have a link and will provide it, but you can easily look it up. If PP is so Pro-Choice, I have to ask if they also have goals for adoptions. To give an award for doing more abortions than their goal just makes me want to puke. Just having a goal makes me want to puke.

I live near and work in Aurora. This is completely untrue. Blatant crap falsehoods that **** me the hell off.

That "award" looks like something someone created in MS Word, posted on a bulletin board and took a picture of to stir up controversy.

There's been no confirmed reports of anything, just the random former employee. Fishy, much?
