Having a hard time to restart....Can't stay focused

Nursing Students NCLEX

:banghead: Suzanne has given me her study guide to prepare for the NCLEX-RN (thanks :) )...But I'm having a hard time sticking to the plan...I need to be motivated and pushed. I just can't seem to get my head back to studying. No books or strategies could ever prepare you for the "big one"...The first time I studied my butt off and I still failed..So, what difference will it make this time??? I'd like to stick with Suzanne's plan but can't saty focus at it....I don't know what part of the Saunders book and CD to begin with (quiz? study? exam mode?)...Then of course when you click on each of the modes it will give you different system to be tested on ( respiratory/cardio/nervous etc.....) It's so muchhhhhhh ........What do I need to do?????? I really want to pass the board!!!!!!!!! Please help!!!!!!!!!!!

You should not need the book at this point, only the CD. You start by doing 100 questions per day, just as the program tells you to do. You should have reviewed at least 3000 to 4000 questions before doing the exam. The rationales are also extrmely important as well. It should not take you more than two hours a day to do that.

If you are a recent US grad, then the book should be for review of topics that you are unfamiliar with.

I can't offer any more than that. You need to do the work, if you want to pass.

Dear mye614:

From a psychological perspective failing NCLEX is a loss. This means that you need to have time to process and "grieve" this loss. As you know from your studies, a loss or situational crisis of this nature takes some time to recover from. There is no set time and each person is different. Your feelings of being overhwhelmed and unfocused suggest that you are still resolving and integrating this experience.

I don't know when you plan to retake NCLEX, but in general for those that are unsuccessful on the NCLEX it may unrealistic to attempt to retake the exam in 45 days. It will take a bit longer to work through the grieving process and be fully ready for the exam.

As you work toward your goal, stick to the plan that has been suggested, but start out by breaking it down into smaller easily accomplished portions. You want to be able to stay focused and have small successes as you work through the plan. Start out with answering a small number of questions (10 per session in study mode) on topics that you know. This will increase your confidence and reinforce previously learned material.

Establish a plan to gradually increase the numbers of questions you can work at each session. Moving slowly and deliberately up to your 100 question/day goal. Along the way gradually introduce the more challenging and unfamiliar topics. By the time you get to this point you will have moved further along in your resolution process. At that point you should be able to fullly adhere to the plan suggested by Suzzane.

All the best ot you as you work toward your NCLEX success.

:yeahthat: Wow, really good post, Leda! Lots of great insights there.

SNAP OUT OF IT!!!

Sometimes we all get that way and just need a quick kick in the orifice to get back into the swing of things. Just buckle down and do it. Break it down into smaller sessions, say 30 minutes each. That's what I have to do when my homework overwhelms me now. Two hours a day isn't that much (I passed with one hour a day), but do what Suzanne says, she as a 100% pass rate and knows what she's saying. Now get on with it!

Ditto to what everyone is telling you.

I'm studying to retake NCLEX myself & at 1st, I felt the same way you did. I gave myself a week away from the books & reassessed things. Try the Kaplan NCLEX- RN book 05-06 edition (for test taking strategies.) This book was recommended to me, by some of my classmates & it really helps. It can seem a little confusing but pull out the strategies that work for you. That's if you decide to purchase it. (you can get from Bks-a-million or some place like that.) Also read Ch.5 in the Saunders comprehensive book, it was a big help too. By then you'll be able to pull together a study strategy that works for you, Suzanne's stategy is great start. Thx Suzanne for the info

You are most welcome.............

You are most welcome.............

Thanks all for all the input! Yes! Starting today, I'm getting back at it! I started this morning. I will remain focus and I will pass this darn exam by hook or by crook ( I don't know how...) on my second attempt. This will be my birthday present for myself (December) and also my christmas present..I am commiting 2-4 hours a day studying following Suzanne's advise..I will do 100 questions a day and then I will review things I'm not familiar with after....Wish me luck and thansk for all the motivation.
