Having a boyfriend while in nursing school....

Nursing Students General Students

Hi folks,

I'm in my last semester of core classes (Micro). I expect to enter nursing school in the Fall of 2007. I'm not dating anyone seriously right now but I would really like to have a boyfriend. On the other hand, I keep hearing that nursing students really don't have time for relationships. Is this true? If so, should I just wait until nursing school is over before persuing a serious relationship? I'm concerned that if I found a man to date that they may not be understanding when it comes to the demands of nursing school, etc.

Having a boyfriend would really complicate my accelerated BSN program since I already have a wife and son.

LOL! I agree...if I had gotten a boyfriend during nursing school, I think it would have really upset my hubby too!:chuckle

Now on the girlfriend front of things, I'm not looking and can't honestly say I'm going to find someone anytime soon because everyone I hang out are in my classes! We're all friends, but I can't imagine dating anyone just because I work and school, night shifting job is tough, and I don't think a gf would understand when I tell her I need to sleep until 2 so I can go back to work.......

that, and the money issues would probably make us rob a bank ala bonnie and clyde.

I am working full time and doing my pre-reqs part time and having an affair with my husband. If you want to have an affair with a new boyfriend then go for it. If you want to have a relationship...wait on it till you finish school.

hmm.lets see, an affair would involve actual time spending, paying attention and sex... so I can officially say my husband isnt even getting an affair outta me....:uhoh3:

That's funny! :lol2: Sorry, I didn't mean to exclude you male students....I had intended to get responses from male students also on their thoughts as well...and "thank you" for the male students who have responded! Thanks very much to ALL of your responses....this helps me alot! :)

I met my husband of 4 plus years while doing my pre-reqs. I also had 2 young boys ages 7 and 9. He was the best thing to come along. He helped with my childrens studies as I did mine. When the boys went to bed. he would sit me down in the kitchen so that I could do my homework. (I also worked every other weekend at a hospital as a nurse aide. While the boys were at their fathers.)

I told my husband from the start that I was too busy for a relationship and that I didn't need the extra stress. He proved me wrong!!

I'm not saying go out and find a man. I'm saying if it happens and he is good to you and knows that you need to study things can work. Also you need to relax once in awhile. Nursing school is very demanding and all work and no play can bring you down!!!!

My opinion is that if you could skip having a boyfriend, it would be better. BUT, it is possible to have a boyfriend while in nursing school. I am a junior in college now in the nursing program, and I have been with my boyfriend for four years. If a guy understands you and loves you, he will support you throughout your studies. And it is definitely possible to have fun and go out on dates while in school. I like to call it time management. If you make a plan to study on a certain day or hour, and stick with it, then you will have enough time to relax and have fun. I also am working part time while in school and go to church a couple times a week at night, and I have a boyfriend, so... it is possible! Now it is different, if you have children and a full time job and are going to school. IN that case, I would definitely stay single for the mean time and focus on school.

i have one year left to go, and i was getting engaged over the summer but he just cant seem to understand all the things that go on in nursing school (the messed up schedules, the clinical paperwork, the endless studying, and don't forget the almighty pity parties - you don't get through nursing school without a few serious breakdowns lol)

i just wish that i had waited to get into a serious relationship that honestly right now is causing me more stress than school. who needs it?

good luck to you !! stay focused and you'll be fine.

I met my boyfriend during my prereqs and he is still very supportive...in fact I think he makes it easier for me since he is always there to ease my mind when things get stressful.

Why should you have to wait? Don't put anything in your life off...if you meet a good guy, he will understand and be supportive...why would you want to give that up? I wouldn't try to plan so much either. Just go with the flow. If you meet someone who is good for you...great! If not, that's good too because you are still busy working toward your own goals. You can't plan your relationships no matter how hard you try so you shouldn't worry about this unless you meet someone with potential.

Good luck!

As a recent grad I can understand your concern!! I found that I definitely did NOT have time for a serious relationship (although I worked a lot as well as attending school full time.). However on that same note I did not meet that "ideal" guy yet either. I think if the guy is mature enough and respects you and your educational goals then yes it could definitely work. It's just a matter of sacrificing...but go for your dreams and dont let anyone get in the way!!! In my case I just dated guys who didnt understand why i spent so much time studying...but in the end it paid off, passed boards on the 1st try! good luck!
