Have ppl given you nursing "items"?

Published

I've been given a key chain from my mom for Christmas that says nurses have heart. It's so cute and I told her I was afraid to put it on and she said she gave it to me because she knows I will become a nurse. But it freaks me out, I'm so superstitious and worried that if I get something like that, I won't get into nursing school. Weird I know.

Has anyone else recieved gifts like this or have friends that already refer to you as a nurse?

For Christmas my husband (who has had his issues with my going back to school - let's just say it's been a "process") got me the game "Operation". He didn't put it under the tree, but waited until all the other gifts were opened and then gave it to me.:lol2:

It was his way of calling a truce - what a sweetie.

I also got a really cute pair of tights from my best friend. They're navy blue with little stethoscopes, nursing caps, and charts all over them. I don't know where I'd wear them, but they're really cute.

Other than my husband, my mother-in-law has been my biggest supporter. When she found out I applied to nursing school, she bought me a charm for my Italian charm bracelet. It's a little white nurses cap with a red cross on it. Then, I received an encouraging card on Nurse's Day from her with a wonderful note inside. And when I got into nursing school, she gave me this coin that says "God Bless Nurses" and on the other side, it has a prayer on it. I carry it with me to all my exams and when I'm working. She has also given me a Nursing Guardian Angel figurine that says "Bless this Angel of Mercy, Who answers compassion's call, With healing hands and gentle heart, She cares for one and all".

I would never have made it through the first semester without her and she is my guardian angel. :nurse:

Melanie,

Your mil sounds great. How wonderful for you to have such support. Great gifts, too.

My Dad gave me a Littman stethoscope and my husband gave me a Timex Expedition watch. Of course, I still haven't started the actual nursing program yet.

As for the questions, I am glad to have read this post. People do ask questions from me about medical stuff, especially family. I do what you all do, tell them to see their doctor.

My two younger sisters are RNs. One of them gave me some of her nursing journals, which I really like.

I'm half way through the LPN program. I'm the one asking them questions. Our mom likes to brag on us. LOL. All 3 daughters nurses.

After 28 years, I am a bit over the nursing gifts, unfortunately no one realizes it. Got 4 this Christmas.

Got a nursey charm bracelet that is sooooooooo cute. Though I won't wear at hospital where I volunteer until I actually am one.

Although I got such a thrill the other day. I had to deliver a baby bag to a new mom at the hospital, and the patient was on the phone at the time, and she said to whoever whe was talking to, "yeah, a nurse just came in to give me ......" It was the FIRST time anyone has called me a nurse! I tell ya I got butterflies, and a big grin. I didn't correct her since she was on the phone. But was I tickled! :D

my FIL and MIL bought me a littmann cardio 3 for xmas!! Yea! I needed a new steth so bad! They also gave me a "Nurses Prayer plaque".

I like to collect little nurse figurenes(sp?), so my hubby bought me a little porceline bear dressed in "old school" nursing uniform...soo cute!

I HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY NURSE GIFTS YET, BUT I'M ALWAYS GETTING THE "YOU GOING TO BE A NURSE, WHAT SHOULD I DO" QUESTIONS. I HAVE TO REMIND THEM THAT I'M NOT EVEN IN MY PROGRAM YET!!:)

That happened to me too before I even started.

Wow, I feel so left out...

I got some white scrubs for Xmas (only because I asked for them), and no one asks me questions-except my hubby sometimes. But, he does brag that I am in school for nursing. My whole family has been VERY supportive, too. Maybe they just don't trust my judgement enough to ask me medical questions!:chuckle

My mother in law asks me about drug interactions ALL the time. She knows I have my handy dandy little Palm pilot program that checks for med interactions and will call me up to find out if it's okay to take this with that, etc. I does make me feel good to be able and answer her question, especially when her own pharmacist was lazy and told her to call the doctor to get that info. For crying out loud, they have a drug handbook in the pharmacy!!

And when my kids don't feel good, they will ask me "what's wrong with me, mom" and "do you want to listen to my heart?". :D
