I noticed this problem at the end of first year. I became a really negative person, hated life, thought everything was unfair, and I'm 100% sure it was because of my first year of nursing.
I did a complete 360 on my negativity the next year, and made many new friends and started my own business while in my second year of nursing. But, I only was able to do this because I started to focus on things outside of nursing. I still get straight As, but my heart is not in it.
Is it just me? Do I just not like nursing? Or does anybody else experience this?
I believe after one year of nursing I was still painfully aware of the daunting learning curve, as exemplified by the occasional response I've seen to posts where a mistake is described (responsibly rather than blaming others)
"you could kill someone if you did that!" Yeah, thanks . . I was rarely not thinking about that at the time. Also, I entered the field with a pragmatic frame of mind, and was familiar with the healthcare employment field such that I didn't have lofty expectations of either myself or my patients.
Based just on what I read here about what current new nurses face, emphasis on customer service while staffing cut to the bone, frequent punitive write-ups, managers undercutting staff nurses in a dispute, etc. I may very well have developed a negative attitude toward people, because the powers that be seem to actually encourage behaviors that lead to nurses feeling cynical, and of being disrespected from all sides.

I'm sorry but this has been bugging me. You did a 180, not a 360. If you did a 360, you would come full circle. You do a 180 when you completely change from one position to another.
Anyway, the answer is "no" nursing has not made me more negative. I was already negative prior to being a nurse. In fact, I have become more positive because of my depression and PTSD. I refuse to let excuses and a negative outlook get in my way. I only have this one life and I am going to make the most of it!
Nursing is merely a way to make money. If i happen to make a difference in someone's life, that is just a plus.
