Has anybody failed?

I started school in Spring 03 and failed the first year of nursing by 3 points!! (Yes, they are THAT particular!!) It burned me up!!:angryfire But I restarted the program in Spring 04 and I hope & pray i don't fail again. I wasn't really focusing on school the first time so I do understand why I failed, and I am serious about nursing school now so I know it won't happen again. Has anybody else ever failed, or just me??????

Jaime, just wanted to send good wishes your way ... sounds like you're refocused this time around! :)

I've had to learn some life lessons The Hard Way too ...

Good luck.. I haven't failed yet, but I'm just starting! :chuckle

I know that our program doesn't round points up though, so if you fail by even .2 points, you've still failed. Eek! :o

I haven't, thank God!! But there were about 5 people in my second semester group who did... I have only talked to 2 of them, and they are both repeating. I think that nursing school is really hard, and some people will have to repeat, but if you really want to be a nurse, don't give up!! Our school is strict too. We have to get 75 points, and anything less than that, no discussions- you don't pass. Good luck with it... you're not alone and you should be proud of yourself for not quitting, and also for realizing what brought you down in the first place. :)

Actually Jamie I did fail my first semester of nursing. I was depressed all through out christmas. I told myself if I'm failing entry level nursing there is no way I'm going to make it through the whole program. I know a friend of mine that failed by less that 1 pt. Can you believe that!

Anyway, that was a turning point in my life. I didn't study much that semester but went in the following semester with a clean slate. I than sprinted past my other nursing classes and never failed another. It can be done Jamie. Don't lose your confidence. {{{{{FOCUS MORE THE SECOND TIME AROUND}}}}} GOOD LUCK! :)

You're certainly not alone! I haven't failed (yet) and hopefully I won't but I know of several who did. Some of them took a year off (since classes only start 1x/year in August), makeup the class they failed and rejoin once again. Good luck to you.

BTW...the sister of my friend failed by only 1 point and will be rejoining us in our junior (2nd) year...along with her brother. Should be interesting! :)

One of by best friends failed this semester by .35. She had a 74.65 and our school does not round points. It was a very very sad day because She, another girl and I have been inseparable since starting the program last year. Best of luck!!!!! Just keep at it!!!!!!!!

Our school also has no mercy points wise-75% is the cutoff-period :o . So, while I am just starting, I can see why others have failed! I hope I can pull through! Best of luck to you-sounds like you are super-determined to succeed!

I'm just starting, so we'll see what happens. I wouldn't worry, though. If you weren't focusing the first time and still almost made it by a few points, I'm sure by studying more you will excel. :)

I dropped my online Chemistry this summer because I knew I was failing. My cummulative GPA is 3.89 and I have worked extremely hard to get those grades. I will try again this fall. I am not so much hung up on the GPA, but on the fact that I am 35 years old, Mom of 3, and work full time. As corny as it sounds, failure is not an option. I understand about being focused! You have to be to make it in the profession. I think failure or coming close to failure makes you appreciate it much more!! I made it through the LPN and AD programs so I know I can complete my BSN and MSN.

Hopefully I won't fail (haven't failed so far) but I have known students to fail with a 75.5 average, our school has a 76 passing grade. I do think it's unfair because technically a 75.5 is a 76. They round up every other grade except the passing grade. And every other major or class rounds up.

I didn't fail I withdrew from the program. My test scores weren't very good and the professors didn't seem to know what they were doing. Example? On test #2 at the end they would grade them and go over them with us. They would tell us the correct answer and give us the rationale for it. Two of the professors got into a disagreement about the correct answers to some of the questions. (Things that make you go hmmmmmm) Come on, if they don't know the correct answer how are the going to teach us and give us the correct answers.

Our class had a lot of LPN's in it and the lecture was more so geared toward them. One professor asked told us to raise our hands if we knew what syncope was and a few students raised their hands. She then proceeded on with lecture negleting to tell us what it was. Granted I wrote it down and looked it up later, but seriously 75% of your class is made up of people off the street wanting to become nurses. Would it have hurt for her to tell us what it was or at least how to spell it. Then during skills lab when we were learning how to do blood pressure the teacher basically told the LPN's in our class to teach us.

Clinical rotation started 4 weeks into the program but we hadn't even learned all the clinical skills yet much less been checked off on them. Many of us didn't even know how to give bed baths and were told to watch a video.

We couldn't give meds because we hadn't gone over that yet. The pharmacology portion of the program was incorportated into our lectures and even those seminar's were rushed.

I dropped out of their program feeling dazed, confused, and dumb. My self-esteem had plumeted and I felt lost. I thought it was something I did wrong. Luckily my mom(whose an RN) was there to pick me up otherwise I wouldn't have tried again. She has worked with many of the graduates from there and many of them are finding it difficult to pass the NCLEX. I later found out that out of a class of 130 only 20+ students went on to the next semester. Some people failed and some people dropped like I did.

The program I'm in now seems a lot more organized and positive. We just had orientation and all the professors seem really confident. They even took the time to tell us how we should study, and how to take exams. (My other school didn't. I had no idea that nursing tests were differnet fromt he one's I have taken during the last 14 years of my education) They even willingly gave us information about their pass rate.(Which seemed like a huge secret at my other school) Instead of telling us that many of us won't pass, they told us that if we worked hard and asked for help we would pass. We even have a separate class for pharmacology. I'm excited about being back and have a renewed self esteem.

For those sending out applications; talk to people who are in the program and try to speak to some of the teachers. You might also want to get information on their pass rates. Be sure it's the right schoo for you.
