OK, so as you might have gathered I am almost done with school. I am in my last semester of my ADN program and I am feeling VERY relieved, but a little scared to actually get out there and work as an RN. Everyone asks me something like, "So, do you know what kind of nursing you want to do?" I usually just shrug and say something like, "Wherever I get a job". I don't know why I find it hard to really answer that question. I know it might be really early to think about about specialty, and a lot people say to do the year of Med-Surg first......
I have been toying with the idea of getting into Peds. I had an amazing experience in Peds and the nurses I was with kept telling me to apply because they want more male nurses in Peds.
Any advice?

If you want to do peds, apply. I have worked peds for my entire career... we had two men on my unit and there were several in the ER, ICU, PACU and psych that I know of.

Go for it man! Part of being a good nurse is being in the area that most interests you. Try to do your preceptorship in PEDS if that's what you really want to do.

I work in PICU with a guy who is a terrific nurse, and there are two men on our general peds units. Go for it - it's a great specialty.

Hey there. I am a new graduate of a BSN program and just accepted a position in the float pool at St. Louis children's hospital. There is a definite need for more males in pediatric settings! Most children's hospitals are actively recruiting men. What better way to promote and expose young people to the reality that men are nurses too! Good luck and start applying!

If Peds is where your heart is telling you to go, then go there! You do not have to do a year of med/surg in order to do Peds. General Peds IS med/surg. Some of the best Peds nurses I've worked with over the years have been men. They seemed to be big "softies".

why would your gender be even remotely applicable to wanting to do peds?

Peds nursing is so fun. I'm transitioning from respiratory therapy to nursing and I've been in peds for 11 yrs and its fun. I get paid to "goof
off" or more act like a big kid.

Go for it -- why not? I had a male pediatrics instructor (clinical) in nursing school nearly 30 years ago who had been working in peds for years.

Go for it. I mostly work in NICU, but I have spent a lot of time in nursery, peds, and even school nursing.
